The California Challenge, Oct. 4-6, 2013
at the Orange County Great Park, Irvine, California
The California Challenge will be held October 5-6 during the Solar Decathlon 2013 and XPO in Irvine, California. The site is the Orange County Great Park (OCGP), a 1300-acre recreational park focused on sustainability. The OCGP has four runways, each one-mile long, because it used to be an air force base. The runways are located in the middle of the park and provide an excellent venue for time trials and efficiency races.
As an enhancement to the Solar Decathlon, the City of Irvine is planning the XPO: Clean+Renewable+Efficient Energy Exposition to run concurrently. The goal is to use every area of the Orange County Great Park to stage a “world’s fair” of clean, renewable and efficient energy. How to power transportation is an important part of the XPO.
The Solar Decathlon was started on the National Mall in Washington, DC. Since 2002, six competitions have been held there. In October 2013 the Solar Decathlon will be held outside Washington for the first time. The California venue was chosen for its sunny weather and ample room to expand. In addition to showcasing the best in housing and solar energy, all renewable and sustainable technologies will be showcased during the Clean Energy XPO.
Inside the XPO will be a Transportation Zone to showcase and demonstrate clean vehicles of all kinds. The California Challenge will be one of the main attractions within the Transportation Zone.
We are so excited to be holding the California Challenge alongside the Solar Decathlon, and hope you are too. Our goal is to create the largest clean energy event ever held in California.
