The Fall 2018 Schedule of Classes will be posted this Saturday, May 5. In preparation, we have compiled the following information for you regarding enrollment in CHP courses for the upcoming quarter. For more information on when to enroll, be sure to visit the Registrar’s calendar. The CHP staff will be available next week to answer your enrollment questions. In fact, the week 6 coffee hour (Friday, May 11, 9:00-11:00 a.m.) is designated for drop-in advising and the CHP advisors will be available to answer your questions over coffee and donuts (or bagels!)
SPECIAL INFORMATION FOR YOUR CHP CLASS:
- CURRENT FRESHMEN: must select one of two CHP course tracks to complete your sophomore and junior CHP classes: CHP Classic or Sustainable Societies.
- CURRENT SOPHOMORES: you have already selected your CHP course track.
- CURRENT JUNIORS AND SENIORS: you are on CHP Classic Track.
Sustainable Societies
CHEMISTRY H30A
- Who should enroll: Current CHP freshmen who are finishing up Humanities Core and intend to complete all six courses of this track rather than Social Science Core + Science Core (on CHP Classic Track).
- All current CHP freshmen who complete Honors Humanities Core are eligible and have been pre-authorized to begin the track in the fall.
SOCIAL SCIENCE H30D
- Who should enroll: Current CHP sophomores who are enrolled in EARTH SYSTEM SCIENCE H30C for Spring 2018.

- If Social Science H1G is full before you enroll and you need to take the course next quarter, then add yourself to the waitlist. Showing demonstrated need (via students on the waitlist) will allow us to secure a larger room for the course. Alternatives to Social Science H1G include taking Bio Sci H90 or one of the designated honors seminars.
BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES H90
- Who should enroll: This class has been specially designed for CHP non-science majors. All current CHP freshmen and sophomores have been pre-authorized for Science Core.
- This course will cover the history of scientific inquiry.
Honors Seminars
The CHP offers specially designed honors seminars that provide a small class environment, focus on an exciting topic, and are taught by diverse and engaging UCI faculty. All CHP students, with the exception of incoming freshmen, are invited to enroll in an Honors Seminar. For those on the CHP Classic track, an honors seminar can be used to substitute for one quarter of a CHP core course as designated by the CHP. Please visit the Honors Seminars webpage for course descriptions and for more information about how these seminars may help you fulfill your CHP core course requirements.
- CHP CLASSIC TRACK ONLY: You may use ONE total seminar to substitute for ONE QUARTER of a CHP core course as designated by the CHP. Only ONE total substitution is permitted per student throughout your entire time at UCI, although you may take as many seminars as you wish for GE or elective credit.
- If you are planning to enroll in a seminar for Fall 2018 but are unable to enroll in a seminar, then you are expected to enroll in the equivalent CHP core course.
- Current CHP freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors and transfer students have been pre-authorized to enroll in these courses.
Seminars offered for Fall 2018 include:
EXPLORING MEMORY – HUMAN H80 with Professor Sarah Farmer
Credit: GE Category IV, may substitute for one quarter of Social Science Core.
HOW NATIONS REMEMBER – HUMAN H83 with Professor Anke Biendarra
Credit: No GE credit at this time GE Category III, may substitute for one quarter of Social Science Core.
WHAT IS SPACE – LPS H81 with Professor John Manchak
Credit: GE Category II, may substitute for one quarter of Science Core
CHP Research/Thesis Seminar
Current CHP juniors and seniors who are beginning research for your CHP thesis are invited to enroll in CHP Director Ted Wright’s research/thesis seminars next year. This set of seminars will provide CHP students who are not participating in an upper division school or major honors program with extra support during the honors thesis process: University Studies H176A (Fall) and H176C (Spring). [Note: These courses do not replace the required two quarters of research with your thesis faculty advisor.]
UNIVERSITY STUDIES H176A
2 units pass/no pass
F 2:00-3:50 p.m.
SSL 171
If you want to take the course but have a conflict with this time, Professor Wright will try to adjust the schedule. This course will help you identify, understand, refine, and then become proficient in describing the goals of your research and its background. Under Professor Wright’s guidance, you will learn about the research process and work to create a research plan as well as an abstract or prospectus that can become the basis for your introduction. In-class discussion, peer edits, and feedback will offer the kind of support you would have in a research group. For an authorization code, email honors@uci.edu with your:
- Name
- Student ID #
- Faculty advisor’s name
- A couple of sentences about where you are in your research/thesis process
Additional Important Information
- All CHP courses must be taken for a letter grade.
- If you have unexpected or unusual scheduling difficulties, or if you are planning to study abroad or participate in UCDC during fall quarter, you must submit a petition (to postpone, etc.) by the end of week 8. Petitions are not guaranteed to be approved.
