The Spring 2017 schedule of classes will be posted this Saturday, February 11 at https://www.reg.uci.edu/perl/WebSoc. In preparation, we have compiled the following information for you regarding enrollment in CHP courses for the upcoming quarter. For more information on when to enroll, be sure to visit the Registrar’s Calendar. The CHP staff will be available all of next week to answer your enrollment questions.
HUMANITIES 1C & H1CS
- Who should enroll: All CHP freshmen
- Make sure to enroll in both parts of Honors Humanities Core:
- HUMAN 1C Lecture (“Humanities Core Lec”); there will be three to choose from and they will be listed directly above the honors (“H”) seminars
- HUMAN H1CS Seminar (“Hum Core Wrt Honors”); there are several to choose from and each of these is linked with a specific lecture
- Sometimes certain seminar sections displayed on the Schedule of Classes end up not being offered, so please plan a back-up section just in case.
- If you are an NCAA athlete or a declared Drama, Dance, or Music major who has scheduling difficulties due to your practice/rehearsal schedule, you need to email requests for specific sections to honors@uci.edu by February 22nd.
CHEMISTRY H2C/LC
- Who should enroll: All students currently enrolled in Chemistry H2C/LC and who need to continue with general chemistry
- Make sure to enroll in all four parts of Honors Chemistry:
- CHEM H2C Lecture
- CHEM H2C Discussion
- CHEM H2LC Lab Lecture
- CHEM H2LC Lab
- In the unlikely event that you will be unable to continue with Honors Chemistry, we will address this schedule change with you in Week 1 of Spring (grades will be posted on Friday, March 31st). Until then, you should enroll in Honors Chem H2C/LC as normal.
SOCIAL SCIENCE H1E
- Who should enroll: All CHP sophomores and juniors have been pre-authorized for Honors Social Science Core.
- If Social Science H1E is full before you enroll and you need to take the course next quarter, then add yourself to the waitlist. Showing demonstrated need (via students putting themselves on the waitlist) will allow us to secure a larger room for the course if necessary.
- Alternatives to Social Science H1E include taking Chemistry H90 or taking a designated special honors seminars.
CHEMISTRY H90
- Who should enroll: This class has been specially designed for CHP non-science majors. All CHP sophomores and juniors have been pre-authorized for Honors Science Core.
- Enrollment in lecture and discussion is required.
SPECIAL HONORS SEMINARS
The CHP is pleased to offer specially designed honors seminars that can be used to substitute for one quarter of a CHP core course as designated by the CHP. Please visit the Honors Seminars webpage for course descriptions and for more information about how these seminars may help you fulfill your CHP core course requirements. Seminars offered for Spring 2017 include:
- HUMANITIES H82
- “Sanctuary: Medieval and Beyond” with Professor Elizabeth Allen
- Who should enroll: This small, four-unit honors seminar is open to all CHP sophomores, juniors, seniors and transfer students in the CHP on a first come, first served basis. These students have been pre-authorized to enroll.
- Credit: GE Category III or IV, may substitute for one quarter of Social Science Core.
- Only one automatic substitution of a seminar for a core course total permitted per student; no petition needed.
- HUMANITIES H145
- “The Arts of Contemporary Communication” with Professor James Herbert, Professor Julia Lupton, and Professor Jonathan Alexander
- Who should enroll: This small, four-unit honors seminar is open to all CHP sophomores, juniors, seniors and transfer students in the CHP on a first come, first served basis. These students have been pre-authorized to enroll.
- Credit: No GE credit, no CHP core course credit.
- LOGIC & PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE H80
- “Scientific Realism and Instrumentalism” with Professor Kyle Stanford
- Who should enroll: This small, four-unit honors seminar is open to all CHP sophomores, juniors, seniors and transfer students in the CHP on a first come, first served basis. These students have been pre-authorized to enroll.
- Credit: GE Category II, may substitute for one quarter of Science Core.
- Only one automatic substitution of a seminar for a core course total permitted per student; no petition needed.
- MUSIC H80
- “Experiments in Music” with Professor Christopher Dobrian
- Who should enroll: This small, four-unit honors seminar is open to all CHP sophomores, juniors, seniors and transfer students in the CHP on a first come, first served basis. These students have been pre-authorized to enroll.
- Credit: GE Category IV, may substitute for one quarter of Social Science Core.
- Only one automatic substitution of a seminar for a core course total permitted per student; no petition needed.
- PHYSICS H80
- “The Impact of World War I on Physics, Chemistry, Astronomy, and other Sciences” with Professor Virginia Trimble
- Who should enroll: This small, four-unit honors seminar is open to all CHP sophomores, juniors, seniors and transfer students in the CHP on a first come, first served basis. These students have been pre-authorized to enroll.
- Credit: GE Category II, may substitute for one quarter of Science Core.
- Only one automatic substitution of a seminar for a core course total permitted per student; no petition needed.
ADDITIONAL IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
- Freshmen, if you need to enroll in more than 18 units during the initial enrollment window, feel free to stop by the CHP Office to touch base about your options.
- All CHP courses must be taken for a letter grade.
- Honors to Honors transfer students, please note that you are required to take one CHP research seminar or one course toward completion of your school/major honors program during your first year at UCI.
- If you have unexpected or unusual course planning difficulties, you must submit a petition (to postpone, etc.) by the end of week 8. Please note that the CHP has made changes to the petitioning process. If you wish to meet with a CHP advisor to discuss a draft of your petition, call the CHP Office at (949) 824-5461. Petitions are not guaranteed to be approved.
- Please note that you do not need to take CHP Social Science Core and Science Core in order. You just need to take at least one course a quarter until both cores are completed.
- Seniors who need to enroll in Science Core or Social Science Core, please email honors@uci.edu by February 22nd to be authorized to enroll.
