2016-2017 Freshman Honors Housing Information

If you have applied for on-campus housing, you should receive both your housing contract offer and Personal Information (PI) Form from UC Irvine Student Housing between May 17th and May 27th. Please make a note of all deadlines connected with this contract. If you miss these deadlines, you will invalidate your housing offer/guarantee.

There are honors housing options in the Arroyo Vista, Mesa Court, and Middle Earth residential housing communities. The following information allows you to compare these options and explains how to indicate your interest in living in an honors residence hall or house in one of these communities. This information is based on the most current updates from Student Housing and is subject to change. Please keep an eye on your email for any changes or further updates to this information.

If living in honors housing is more important to you than the specific housing community that you live in, then follow these steps to increase your chances of receiving honors housing:

  • Question #7 on the Residence Hall Personal Information (PI) form reads, “For Campuswide Honors Program (CHP) students only: Please indicate whether you would prefer to live in either of the CHP halls.”

Select “I would be happy with either of the CHP halls”

  • Question #8 on the Residence Hall PI form reads, “Of the three placement criteria listed below, which one is important to you?”

Select “Theme hall”

  • If you are open to living in Arroyo Vista, but Middle Earth or Mesa Court are your first preferences, make sure to list Arroyo Vista as your second housing preference on the Fall 2016 Freshman Housing Options Survey (https://eee.uci.edu/survey/2016FRHousingOptions).
  • Respond promptly to the “CHP Freshman Survey – 2016” that will be emailed to you from the CHP Office in mid-June. This survey will allow you to elaborate on your housing preferences, and if selected for honors housing, will help us to pair you with a roommate.

Arroyo Vista

  • Arroyo Vista (AV) is a unique housing opportunity for Campuswide Honors Program (CHP) freshmen. AV is a housing community where each house has a different “theme,” in our case, Campuswide Honors. This year AV will be available to first-year and continuing students. Each house is home to 16, 24, or 32 residents who live in double occupancy rooms and share a large kitchen, living room, study room, and laundry facilities. Residents prepare their own meals or may purchase a voluntary meal plan for use in residence hall dining facilities. Visit http://www.housing.uci.edu/housingOptions/Arroyo_Vista.html for more information on the AV housing community.
  • Some advantages of living in Arroyo Vista include:
    • The cost is significantly less than the Middle Earth or Mesa Court freshman housing communities.
    • The AV honors houses provide a small community in which you have the opportunity to meet upperclassmen in the CHP.
    • AV is located near the Anteater Recreation Center.
    • You can cook for yourself (a grocery store is within walking distance).
    • Shuttle buses are available to take you to the main campus.
  • We are reserving one of our three AV honors houses for new incoming CHP freshmen for 2016-2017. Some CHP freshmen may also have the option to live in an AV honors house with continuing CHP students. We have limited spaces in Arroyo Vista and will fill those spaces on a first come, first served basis.
  • If you want to live in Arroyo Vista, you need to list “Arroyo Vista freshman theme houses” as your first housing preference on the Fall 2016 Freshman Housing Options Survey (https://eee.uci.edu/survey/2016FRHousingOptions) by 8 a.m. on Monday, May 16th. Please note: if you have already completed this survey but would like to change your response, you may take the survey again and the Student Housing Office will use your most recent submission.
  • To request a space in one of the Arroyo Vista honors houses:
    • Submit the Fall 2016 Freshman Housing Options Survey listing Arroyo Vista as your first choice for housing preference.
    • Send an email to honors@uci.edu with your name, student ID# and indicating your preference for an honors house in Arroyo Vista.

Mesa Court

  • Mesa Court is one of two housing communities for first-year students. Mesa Court has 29 halls that range in size from 48-85 bed-spaces, and in fall 2016, Mesa Court will open 3 new towers with six floors each, housing a total of 800 additional students.  In the 29 “classic” halls, rooms are clustered in single-gender suites, with common space for studying or socializing. Most “classic” hall rooms are double-occupancy, but a limited number of single- and triple-occupancy rooms are also available. Each “classic” hall has a living room, small kitchen, and laundry facilities. The new “tower” rooms are mostly triples (with one floor of quads in each building) situated on coed floors, and single gender room pairs will share a bathroom.  The “towers” are equipped with study space on every floor, a great room with kitchen, and laundry facilities.  Visit http://www.housing.uci.edu/housingOptions/Mesa_Court.html for more information on the Mesa Court housing community.
  • If you want to live in Mesa Court, you need to list “Residence Halls” as your first housing preference on the Fall 2016 Freshman Housing Options Survey (https://eee.uci.edu/survey/2016FRHousingOptions) and select Mesa Court as your Preferred Residence Hall Community on your forthcoming Personal Information (PI) Form.
  • Please note that if you list the Sierra Program as your first preference for theme in Mesa Court and you are selected for that hall, then you will be required to take a Sierra-related course your first year in addition to your regular CHP and major requirements.
  • How to request a space in one of the Mesa Court honors halls (Arroyo and Loma) using your Personal Information Form:
    • Question #7 on the PI form reads, “For Campuswide Honors Program (CHP) students only: Please indicate whether you would prefer to live in either of the CHP halls.”

Select “I prefer the Academic Excellence CHP hall in Mesa Court.”

Please note: selecting the “I would be happy with either of the CHP halls” answer option will increase your chances of receiving honors housing somewhere on campus, though it may not be in Mesa Court.

    • Question #6 on the PI form reads, “Please select three Theme preferences within Mesa Court.”

Select “Campuswide Honors Hall” as your 1st Choice theme preference.

Middle Earth

  • Middle Earth is one of two housing communities for first year students. Middle Earth has 24 residence halls ranging in size from 45 to 75 bed-spaces. Rooms are grouped into suites (single gender or co-ed), with common space for studying or socializing. Most rooms are double- or triple-occupancy, but some single-occupancy rooms are also available. Most halls are co-ed, though all-female, all-male, and gender neutral options are available outside of honors housing. Each hall has a living room, small kitchen, and laundry facilities. Visit http://www.housing.uci.edu/housingOptions/Middle_Earth.html for more information on the Middle Earth housing community.
  • If you want to live in Middle Earth, you need to list “Residence Halls” as your first housing preference on the Fall 2016 Freshman Housing Options Survey (https://eee.uci.edu/survey/2016FRHousingOptions) and select Middle Earth as your Preferred Residence Hall Community on your forthcoming Personal Information Form.
  • How to request a space in the Middle Earth honors hall (The Shire) using your Personal Information Form:
    • Question #7 on the PI form reads, “For Campuswide Honors Program (CHP) students only: Please indicate whether you would prefer to live in either of the CHP halls.”

Select “I prefer The Shire CHP hall in Middle Earth.”

Please note: selecting the “I would be happy with either of the CHP halls” answer option will increase your chances of receiving honors housing somewhere on campus, though it may not be in Middle Earth.

    • Question #3 on the PI form reads, “Please select three Theme preferences within Middle Earth.”

Select “Campuswide Honors Hall” as your 1st Choice theme preference.

Special Notes

  • If you have potential non-CHP roommates, they can be considered for honors housing options as well. Just follow the instructions on your PI form to indicate your preferred roommate. They must select you as their preferred roommate as well, and should also select the appropriate theme on their PI form as listed above.
  • If you are offered a contract in a housing community OTHER THAN Mesa Court, Middle Earth, or Arroyo Vista, please note that honors housing is not available in that housing community.
