Ever since studying the effects of invasive species on local creeks in high school, I have had an interest in learning more about how environmental sustainability is implemented in other areas.  Unfortunately, I was never aware of the various opportunities our campus gives students to further their interest in global sustainability until recently. Through the Costa Rica Program, I hope to gain insight into the differences and similarities between our local communities (the OC areas and Mastatal), in terms of our views on the environment.

My previous experiences in cultural immersion include a volunteer trip to rural areas in Kenya over summer 2013. I helped build classrooms for a primary school, interacted with local children, and learned about the Kenyan education system. My experiences in Kenya really helped formulate my passion for cultural immersion programs as an educational tool. My biggest hope for this program is that all the participants will step outside of their comfort zone and make the most of their new experiences in Costa Rica.
