Description
The Self-Report of Offending scale assesses antisocial and illegal behavior (SRO; Huizinga, Esbensen, & Weihar, 1991). The SRO is a 24-item scale assessing whether (and how many times) youths have engaged in different types of criminal activity “ever” (baseline only) and over “the last 6 months” (all follow ups). For each endorsed item, a set of follow-up questions are triggered that collect more information regarding the reported offense (e.g., “How old were you the first time you did this?”). The follow-up items can be used to identify the age of onset and whether or not the act was committed with a gun, for example.
Frequency (sum of the total times that youths endorsed engaging in the possible illegal behaviors) and variety (total count of the types of delinquent behaviors that youth positively endorsed) are computed at baseline and the follow-up interviews, with higher scores indicating more illegal behavior.
For situations in which it is important to exclude items related to drug sales, we have computed the Total Offending Variety Proportion – No Drug (ever = [s0srsend]; past six months = [s0sro6nd]; and beyond six months = [s0sroend]) and the Total Offending Frequency – No drug [s0frqND]. Also computed is a variable which calculates the youngest age of the subject’s first offense; Age At First Offense [S0Age1stOffense]; calculates youngest age based on 22 items which ask “How old were you when you first did this?”
