Ted Smith has been a highly visible presence in the UC Irvine Community, helping the university to achieve prominence as a major center of learning, innovation, and community engagement.
His service to UCI has been extensive. In addition to his current membership on the Department of Education Chair’s Advisory Board, Mr. Smith has served as chair of the both U.C. Irvine Foundation and its Nominating Committee and chairman of the U.C. Irvine’s Chief Executive Roundtable. Additionally, he has chaired the Leadership Council for the Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences (ICS) and established with his wife Janice the Ted and Janice Smith Dean’s Chair.
In recognition of his multiple contributions, Mr. Smith received the U.C. Irvine Medal in 2002.
Mr. Smith brings a wealth of experience to his activities at UC Irvine. He served as the executive vice president and a director of Sycor, a New York Stock Exchange listed company that was the first manufacturer of intelligent terminals. In this capacity he helped build the company from a start-up to $54 million in revenue before he left in 1975 to head Basic Four, a small business computer manufacturer.
In 1982 Mr. Smith founded FileNet Corporation. Under Mr. Smith’s leadership as chairman and CEO, FileNet became the worldwide leader in software for document image processing, electronic document management, Enterprise Content Management, and Internet Workflow applications.
Currently, Mr. Smith is a director of two information technology companies, Apriso Corporation, a supplier of manufacturing execution software and WebVisible, an internet advertising firm, and CEO and Chairman of MIND Research Institute, a neuroscience and education research-based non-profit corporation.
Mr. Smith has a bachelor of science in engineering from the University of Maryland, where he was honored as engineering alumnus of the year in 1991. After receiving his university degree, he served two years as an Air Force officer in charge of a radar site on an island in the China Sea. He also did graduate work in computer science and business at UCLA.
