Everything But the Monkey’s Head

img_3706June-July 2016.  EAD faculty member Antoinette LaFarge was the third participant in the Los Angeles-based Institute of Cultural Inquiry’s ongoing residency series entitled With Everything But the Monkey’s Head. The project goal was to build a theory of visual research by examining actual practice-based research projects in progress. Professor LaFarge used her residency to reflect on her recent deep dive into creating pages for ‘missing’ women and people of color on Wikipedia— over 200 such pages in the past couple of years.

During the residency, Professor LaFarge created the Monkey Encyclopedia W, a unique artist’s book with texts drawn from both her Wikipedia write-ups and her critiques of Wikipedia, together with images documenting these women’s lives that cannot be put on Wikipedia because of international copyright law. She also created a series of digital prints, The Flowers of the Field, honoring the little-known British botanical artist Emily Stackhouse, and a lab book that is available on Issuu (requires Adobe Flash). For more on this series of undertakings, see her project page.
