University Funding and California’s Economy

Proposition 30 will add much needed funding for the University of California campuses, and for the California State Universities. This will allow for more classes and more students, and for students to finish faster by getting the classes that they need, and to afford their University education with less student debt. It will also allow us to keep our valuable and talented faculty. But the added value of our children’s and grand children’s educations, the added jobs for the state, and related increases in business and housing values and recovery are also major benefits to everybody.

Direct effects of funding the universities is that its graduates can get better jobs, and expecially jobs in high tech in various areas of the state, in defense and aerospace, and also as teachers for our children.  The universities also bring in a lot of federal research funds and foundation grants, that fund valuable graduate students and post docs, and lead to industry applications and products.  University studies also lead to valuable medical knowledge and applications.

The presence of highly educated graduates encourages industries to come to California and to stay in California.  These industries also bring other highly educated and trained people to move to California, which in turn help our housing market, values, and building and upgrading

By increasing the employment base and the wages of skilled jobs, our state tax revenues also increase, which can bring us out of this slump in educational funding.  If we do not support students and the Universities, the decline in value of our workforce will lead to declines in the many areas that I have discussed, and make life more difficult not only in declining opportunities for our children, but also in the ecoonomic welfare of all of us.
