UC Irvine Out-of-State and Foreign Student Enrollment

UC Irvine Out-of-State and Foreign Student Enrollment

The three current crises for our students are the status of “dreamers”, of students born here who may have illegal family members, and of students from the seven travel-paused and extreme vetting Muslim countries singled out by President Trump.  I am not an expert on existing or new laws, rulings, and executive orders.  I am just reporting on the data on how many of our students may be affected.

UCI is very proud of being a very diverse school, and we have programs for minority recruitment, and cultural centers and clubs for support of these students.  The Chancellor, faculty and students are very concerned about the new effects on our students, and many discussion, talks, and demonstrations are supported on campus.

Graduate Student Enrollment

The data on graduate enrollment from California, the United States, and other Countries is for fall quarter from years 2007 through 2016.

The two numerical columns are for the ten-year average, and then the 2016 number, both for fall enromment.

Graduate Student Origin 2007-2016 Average 2016 Enrollment
California 3,017 2,859
Total of All US States and Terr. 3,985 3,894
Principal Foreign Countries:
China, Peoples Republic 426 591
India 215 313
Korea, Republic of (South) 94 93
Taiwan 87 56
Iran 86 120
Canada 28 43
Total of All Foreign Countries 1,210 1,526
Grand Total 5,195 5,420

From Syria, we had one graduate student, but no longer.  We have 11 graduate students from Mexico.  We have 5 undergraduate students from Iran.

The foreign students here are on student visas.  They are not permanent residents or have green cards.

The Chancellor says that we have 154 students from the seven immigration-delayed countries.  He has advised all of them not to leave the US.

Foreign and out-of-state students pay a much higher tuition than California students.  This helps pay for an expanded campus, and does not limit the number of California students.
