Being a graduate student and juggling coursework, work, and research can be stressful at times. Working out and spending time with friends are certainly excellent outlets to de-stress, and joining a sports club enables you to do these things at the same time.
UCI offers a variety of recreational and competitive sports that you can join. To name a few, there are Ultimate (Frisbee), basketball, badminton, and soccer teams. Depending on the team, you’ll be able to travel and compete in different tournaments and form meaningful friendships with your teammates. For example, the Women’s and Men’s Ultimate teams occasionally travel to places such as Las Vegas and Santa Barbara to compete in weekend tournaments. During the evenings, team members get to hang out with each other and wind down from the demands of the school week.
Joining a sports club may be a great way for you to take a break from your coursework and research. This scheduled rest may help you to recharge and enable you to continue working toward graduation. So, if you’re interested in sports, do consider being a part of a sports team at UCI!

November 17, 2017 at 5:19 pmJust wanted to chime in and say that I absolutely love my experience with club sports. I joined water polo my first year of grad school. While the team is composed of primarily undergrads, I did find fellow grad and MD/PhD participants. The practices always force me to take a break from my work and to do something for my else. I also have the opportunity to travel with a team and to know people OUTSIDE OF MY RESEARCH/CLASSES. Remember that at the end of the day that we are more than students. Having that time to be an athlete and to have fun in the water is what keeps me coming back to my work day every day.
I would strongly recommend that you take the time to try any sports/interests you have while at UCI. People of various skill and experience levels are always welcome.
