Hello Anteaters,
Here are some of the tips for networking and socializing during your stay at UCI:
Networking is simply meeting and socializing with people to build up formal relationships. It is a good way to form connections for an ongoing or future job search as well. Networking can happen anywhere – in class, at work, in your residence hall, through a club on-campus or even online!
Here are some tips for successful networking:
- Have an elevator speech prepared as a way to introduce yourself. An elevator speech is a quick, less than a minute, summary of what people should know about you. A good elevator speech will tell the other person who you are, what you’ve worked on, and what you are looking for.
- Look for groups with odd numbers of people. It is generally easier to strike up a conversation with whoever is not actively engaged in a conversation, rather than awkwardly forcing yourself upon people’s conversation.
- Be friendly and show interest in the conversation. Focus on building a relationship with whoever you are speaking to and be genuine with them.
- Try to ask open-ended questions. Questions that lead to yes or no answers can slow down a conversation. Instead try asking questions that lead to longer, more informative answers. “Tell me more about…” is a great way to learn more about the person you are talking to.
- Follow up on any discussions you had at the Networking event afterwards with a business email. However, be careful not to spam or abuse this potential new contact. Use your judgment for what is appropriate.
