About

The Career Development for Historians Program (CDH) is designed to foster conversations, build scholarly and other professional skills, explore options, and develop students’ confidence in a diverse and demanding employment landscape.

History PhDs possess a range of malleable skills that include, but aren’t limited to:

  • the ability to quickly deconstruct and synthesize complex texts
  • synthesizing, creating, and communicating compelling narratives
  • viewing issues from a variety of perspectives, expanding and narrowing their lines of sight to analyze problems on multiple scales
  • navigating hierarchical bureaucracies and complex, overlapping institutional landscapes, preparing them for corporate, non-profit, and government careers
  • providing a level of cognitive diversity that is often absent in corporate, non-profit, and government job sectors
  • writing for a variety of audiences, allowing them to communicate effectively

Launched in 2018, CDH is one of the twenty program affiliates for the American Historical Association’s Career Diversity Initiative. CDH is made possible by the generous support of our on-campus partners:
