Policy on Absences from Class
Due to normal drop/add activity in week 1 of the term, there will be no penalty for absences in the first week of the term. However, students on the waitlist are strongly encouraged to attend class so that they can join the table discussion group of their choice and get started on setting up their blog. Students who miss class after Week 1 can make up for up to 2 absences by following the directions below. Absences can be excused WITHOUT doing make-up assignment only if student brings a note on official stationery from a physician, a UCI coach, or a government official — confirming that the student was ill, was competing in an athletic event, or had jury duty, etc. Since class meets only 10 times, each unexcused absence (not made up) will drop grade 5%.
Policy on Tardiness
We understand that delays happen and some students have a long walk from their last class. So, some allowance must be made. However, if students are more than 30 minutes late for class, this will be considered a partial absence and they will lose 2 points from their final grade.
You may do either of the assignments below to make up for one absence. To make up for two absences, you must do both assignments.
Make-Up Assignment #1
Since ED 104D is an arts class in which hands-on involvement is important and the class meets only 10 times, students will lose 5 points from their total grade for each unexcused absence (for which there is no note from the student health center, etc.). One absences may be made up in the following manner:
Step 1 — Go to class web page for the day you were absent. Go over the class activities, look at Powerpoints and video clips, do assigned readings and take on-line quizzes associated with that class. Upload the completed Arts Lab and any other assignments on Canvas.
Step 2 — Read the handout A History of Plein Air Art, to learn about the school of California landscape painting the Irvine Museum is known for.
Step 3 — Download the worksheet “Playing the MUSE Game in an Art Museum” from Museum (make-up) assignment on Canvas.
Step 4 — Visit the Irvine Museum to view their exhibit of California landscape paintings.
Step 5 — Choose three paintings. Describe your response to each painting (1/2 page each). You may find the prompts from worksheet “Playing the MUSE Game in an Art Museum” helpful. (As long as you do not use a flash, you may take a photo of each picture with your cell phone and insert it in your makeup paper.)
Step 6 — Upload your make-up paper to the “Museum (make-up)” assignment on Canvas.
Make-Up Assignment #2
If a student has an unexcused absence, they may make up for that absence by viewing the video below, filling out the accompanying worksheet, and typing up their notes as a 500-word summary of the documentary. Please use the headings on the worksheet as the headings on your summary.
