Each week you will have an art lab assignment that you will not only submit for a grade, but will also post on a Canvas discussion board to share with the class. Here are some instructions for how you can post a picture of your creation, as well as record a short audio or video clip describing your thoughts on your work.
Note: We will not be using VoiceThread this quarter. Any mentions of VoiceThread will soon be replaced by Canvas discussions.
As an example, let’s look at the instructions for the first portfolio assignment on Haiku:
In his book, The Arts and the Creation of Mind, Elliot Eisner argued that the results of our thinking are evanescent, meaning that thoughts can be difficult to hold onto if not stabilized through inscription into lasting materials.
This week, using this Canvas discussion, you will demonstrate how thinking can be stabilized and preserved through art. The Haiku assignment gives you a chance to capture a memory through words and images.
Upload a photograph of your Haiku to this discussion, then record an audio clip briefly discussing how you used words and images to recreate a remembered experience that suggested this haiku to you, as well as the thought process by which you created your haiku and illustrated it.
First, you will complete your Haiku assignment. When you are done, go to the Canvas discussion page for the assignment (go back to Canvas and find the assignment for “Week # Portfolio”). Click “Reply” to add your submission to the discussion.
Note: You must complete the following either using a computer with a webcam/microphone, or by using the web browser on your phone to access Canvas. You cannot use the Canvas app on your phone for this assignment.
You will see the above box to add your submission. Click the “Embed Image” button on the toolbar to add a picture of your Haiku. To upload a file from your computer or phone’s camera, click the “Canvas” tab at the top, click “My files”, and then “Upload File”. You may ignore the rest of the options on screen and save your picture.
Then, you will need to record a short audio file describing your work. Click on the “Record/Upload Media” button on the toolbar.
You will be given the option to record a video from your camera or audio from your microphone. You can turn off the video by clicking “Webcam” in the bottom right and turning it off. Then you will be able to record only audio.
When you are ready to record, click “Start Recording”. You will be given a short count-down, and then you can record. After you’re done, you can listen back to your recording, or re-record if necessary. When you’re done, save the recording and it will show up in the editor box. Once both your picture and recording have been added, you can post your reply.
For more information about recording your audio, please see the Canvas help document on recording media.
