iMedEd Release Notes Version 8.11.17

Note-taking on the iPads

This week marked the start of classes for the 8th class of medical school students to receive funding for iPads through the iMedEd Initiative. A majority of students chose to purchase an iPad Pro and take advantage of the Apple Pencil, a stylus that offers greater precision and distinctive features through Pencil-compatible apps.

iPads will be used by the students for note-taking, to take all internal exams and to gain mobile access to educational resources. Note-taking is one of the primary activities for which students will use their iPads during the pre-clinical years. Towards this end, all students were provided their choice of the following apps to support their note-taking preferences:

  • MindNode: a concept-mapping tool that enables visual representation of knowledge and ideas
  • iAnnotate: a feature-rich PDF annotation tool
  • Notability: a note-taking and annotation tool

We are interested to learn how students will take advantage of their iPads and these apps in light of new and improved technology during the coming year.
