USMLE Step 2 Secrets, 3rd Edition

UCIrvine iMedEd iPad App Review

App Name: USMLE Step 2 Secrets, 3rd Edition

Price: $39.99

Brief Description:
This app is an electronic version of the popular book, USMLE Step 2 Secrets, that is used by medical students across the country in preparation for their exam. The app offers the full text of the book, by chapter as well as in “quiz/flashcard” format. It is fully searchable and also features bookmarks.

OVERALL
Pros:
This is an excellent app for someone who is on the go and wants to quickly review (e.g. a medical student with sporadic down time at the hospital). It offers ways to learn at your own pace by picking your own categories of interest to create quizzes, and even lets you email the quiz results to yourself so you can keep track of your progress. It is much more convenient than carrying around a book and does not require internet access for use. There are also images included with the chapters which helps for visual learners.

Cons:
The price point is too high. The book is currently on amazon for $10 less and offers the same content. The added convenience of having a portable app is nice, but there are not enough extra features to justify this price difference, especially since it is a literal conversion of the book to app, without special tailoring to make it app-friendly like rewording the quiz answers to make them more aligned with an easy-to-study “flashcard” format rather than a question/”long answer from a book format”.

Telemedicine and the UNE Australia Collaboration

UCIrvine School of Medicine and the University of New England in rural Armidale, Australia, has started an international collaboration to bring innovative technologies such as the iPad, ultrasound and telemedicine to the students and faculty of the two medical school campuses separated by a geographic distance of almost 7,500 miles. Through this collaboration, state-of-the-art broadband videoconferencing capabilities has allowed medical students at UNE to develop theirĀ  skills of ultrasonography through interactive distance learning sessions led by UCIrvine’s Dr. Chris Fox, Director of Instructional Ultrasound and Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine, while UCIrvine faculty have learned about the benefits and implementation of telemedicine technology from the experienced faculty of UNE. Future collaborations will expand the scope and depth of the learning exchange between the two schools from both the clinical and educational perspectives.

The most recent telemedicine teaching session with UNE Australia occurred on the evening of November 12, 2012. Dr. Chris Fox, Dr. Shahram Lotfipour, Stacy Hata and UNE exchange student Sam Phillips, who has spent the past seven weeks studying with Dr. Fox in an ultrasound elective, successfully demonstrated the ultrasound windows into the heart and spleen for a captive audience in Armidale. The session began with Dr. Fox guiding Sam through the ultrasound windows at UCIrvine with live ultrasound images from the UCIrvine transducer presented to UNE. This was followed by a student at UNE attempting to achieve the same windows on a model in Armidale while Dr. Fox provided telementoring to the UNE student. This session was just the latest in a series of teleultrasound sessions pioneering the remote hands-on teaching of ultrasonography skills. UCIrvine looks forward to the continued partnership with UNE Australia and the cutting-edge opportunities that the two medical schools will share.

The Merck Manual – Professional Edition

UCIrvine iMedEd iPad App Review

App Name: The Merck Manual – Professional Edition

Price: $34.99

Brief Description:
The Merck Manual is a resource for medical professionals that provides clinical information on a multitude of diseases. It allows you to search by symptom, section, or keyword. The resource provides essential information on the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of numerous common and obscure conditions alike.

OVERALL
Pros:
The Merck Manual is a very good reference source for medical information. It is the medical reference app most similar to uptodate.com, and may even be a better information source. The information provided is both accurate and concise. I like that there are multiple ways to search for information including by symptoms, section, or index. I am easily able to find the information I need. When I have a patient with a particular condition, I am able to read the section in the Merck manual quickly, which helps me to formulate my notes and prepare for rounds efficiently.

Cons:
The app is not very visually appealing. It reads like a manual or website page. Many of the graphics (diagrams, tables, charts) require the use of links/pop-ups.

Downcast

UCIrvine iMedEd iPad App Review

App Name: Downcast

Price: $1.99

Brief Description:
Full featured podcast app. Supports audio and vido podcasts, with a vast array of configuration options including iCloud synching, volume amplification and playback speed modulation.

OVERALL
Pros:

  • Amazingly flexible podcasting app, which can do any number of things, from subscribing to custom URLs (as is needed for our podcasts) to syncing through iCloud to one’s iPhone (if available). It can modulate playback speed from 0.5x to 3x in increments of 0.25x (except 0.75x). It has a pre-amp that makes the (so far) quiet podcasts understandable in a slightly noisy environment. It can handle video well and has built in Airplay support.
  • I haven’t even begun to go into all the customizations it supports (partly since I haven’t discovered them myself yet).
  • The reviews on the iTunes Store are universally praiseworthy, and I see no reason for a medical student to use any app but this to listen to their podcasts on the go.
  • Once the video podcasts get posted somewhere, those will work just fine in the app as well.

Cons:
Only downside is it costs money versus the free podcasting app Apple puts out, but it more than makes up for it.

Radiology 2.0: One Night in the ED – iPad Version

UCIrvine iMedEd iPad App Review

App Name: Radiology 2.0: One Night in the ED – iPad Version

Price: Free

Brief Description:
Practice reading and interpreting CT scans

OVERALL
Pros:

  • Excellent app to learn to read and interpret CT images.
  • Fantastic user-friendly interface allows to browse throughout the image with scrolling your finger on the interface.
  • Gives case presentation, and then provides well described interpretation with links to the image that include arrows and highlights to illuminate findings.
  • A great introduction to reading images.

Cons:

  • More images would be nice.
  • Include a “normal” identifying everything on an image without abnormalities for reference.
  • Only CT scans — using this interface for xrays, ultrasound, and MRI’s would be very helpful

PEER VIII Emergency Medicine Question Bank for iOS

Brief video review of the $69.99 PEER VIII iPhone app with comparisons to the print and online version.

    Pros:

  • Same 450 questions as the print and online versions
  • Priced at $69.99 vs $275 for print or online subscription
  • High-quality resizable images
    Cons:

  • Only formatted for iPhone, sorry iPad users
  • Shorter explanations than print/online
  • No way to mark or flag questions for later review

Overall not a bad app, just would not recommend using this as your only question tool!

iMedEd at Mobile World 2012

Mobile World was a day-long event hosted by the Information and Computer Science (ICS) Student Council held on October 3, 2012 in Aldrich Park. The goal of this event was to showcase the many aspects of mobile technologies to the UCI community.

As a part of this event, the ICS Student Council invited students from the School of Medicine to present the iMedEd initiative. Mario Asis, MS2, Aurora Cruz, MS2, Kambria Nguyen, MS2 and Katie Xie, MS2 were on-hand to represent iMedEd and share their experiences with the iPad and technology in medical education.

Overall, this was a great event and we appreciate our second years taking the time for this collaboration with the ICS Student Council. As a reminder, the Med AppJam, our next ICS collaboration, will take place next month. We look forward to having more School of Medicine students involved in this unique and noteworthy event.
