Library STARs Program Requirements

To complete the program, students must:

  • Complete 9 workshops during the school year (Fall, Winter, and Spring)
  • Attend mandatory orientation session November 7, 2018 @ 1pm or November 9, 2018 @ 2pm
  • Complete surveys for the workshops that require it
  • Complete final survey of the overall program

Workshop Descriptions

  • Academic Search Complete (aka EBSCO): The EBSCO platform hosts many databases that UCI Libraries subscribe to. Learn how to conduct keyword searches, use limits and facets to refine your searches, access full text to articles, and much more with Academic Search Complete.
  • ANTPAC: ANTPAC is the UCI Libraries’ public catalog, and one of the first places to look for items that we own. Learn more about its many search functions, how to modify searches, how to retrieve or access materials discovered in ANTPAC, and much more.
  • Active Shooter Incident Training: (Presented by the UCI Police Deapartment) None of us want to think about this situation happening in our work environment. However, in light of the increasing number of shootings that occur across the U.S, we must prepare. The UC Irvine Police Department has been training for such an event for the past 11 years. The critical minutes prior to the arrival of police, where the decisions you make and the actions you take, can make the difference between surviving or not.
  • Basic Sound Recording: (Presented by the MRC multimedia and audiovisual staff) Students will learn about the basics of sound recording, the types of equipment available to them at MRC and the types of licensed and open source sound recording software available to students.
  • Communication/Assertiveness Training: (presented by Counseling Center) Communications is essential in many aspects of our lives, including our interpersonal relationships and public speaking. Gain assertive skills that can help you to convey your needs and goals, while considering the needs and goals of others.
  • Community Building: (presented by Counseling Center) Getting involved on campus and joining organizations can be a big part of student’s life. We will work together on figuring out the different ways on how to build a strong, cohesive team.
  • Conflict Resolution: (presented by Counseling Center) We sometimes have conflicts, and it is important to deal with potential disputes before they become key triggers of stress. Learn and practice ways to deal with conflict before it damages or destroys a relationship.
  • Cross-Cultural Communication: (presented by Center for Excellence in Writing and Communication) In this workshop, several techniques for communicating more effectively with ESL students will be discussed, including ways to avoid communication breakdown, ways to gather more information about the students’ needs, ways to communicate inoffensively, and more.
  • Customer Service Training: Student Assistants will learn the resources and skills needed to provide excellent customer service to our patrons in person, on the phone, and in all electronic formats. We will discuss the different stages of customer interaction and important library policies, as well as act out customer service scenarios.
  • Introduction to Video Production & Editing: (presented by the Multimedia Resources Center) Students will get an introduction on the basics of video production, from pre- to post-production, by practicing on the MRC’s equipment (video camera and tripod) and editing software (iMovie).
  • Introduction to DSLR Photography: (presented by the MRC multimedia and audiovisual staff) Students will learn about basic DSLR camera settings for photography/videography and the types of imaging licensed software and computing equipment available at MRC.
  • Introduction to DSLR Shooting and Photoshop: (presented by the Multimedia Resources Center) Using a hands-on approach, students will learn how to use DSLR camera shooting for photography/videography and the basics of Photoshop
  • Library Career Panel:Come discover the different types of position offered at our UCI Libraries. Hear the stories of their journey to becoming a Anteater Library employee as well as their learning their responsibilities and contributions to making our libraries function.
  • Life Transitions: (presented by Counseling Center) Change can be difficult: Coming to college, leaving home, graduating and starting a new career. There are some major life transitions that can be stressful. Come learn to cope with and prepare for major life transitions.
  • LinkedIn: (presented by The Library Career Interest Group) How to best utilize LinkedIn for career development and getting jobs after college. Build your professional profile and brand. Learn tips from workshops and a graduate course. Topics include profile building, connections/network, and privacy settings. Attendees are offered to get an updated headshot for their profile.
  • Melvyl:  Melvyl is the UCI Libraries union catalog and discovery system. Learn more about what Melvyl indexes, how to refine search results, how to create more precise searches, and how to retrieve or access materials discovered in Melvyl.
  • Microagression & Cultural Awareness: (presented by Counseling Center) Microaggressions are commonplace and negative insults or slights. They can affect us in various ways. Learn what to do if you witness them around you.    May 16 (Tuesday); 7:00-8:00pm; Location: Moss Cove A
  • Oral Presentations: Best Practices & Multimedia Tools: Students will learn rhetorical practices for effective oral presentations as well as the various multimedia tools they can use to supplement their presentation material (e.g., movies, graphics, animation, etc.).
  • Proper Handling of Library Materials: Participants will gain a thorough understanding of how to properly handle and prevent damage to materials in the UCI Libraries collection. As a result they will be able to identify and route library materials that have been damaged.
  • Social Relationships: (presented by Counseling Center) Maintaining healthy and mutually beneficial relationships is important. Primary foci will be on 1) understanding yourself and your needs regarding the relationship, and 2) good communication skills in a successful relationship.
  • Test Anxiety & Stress Management: (presented by Counseling Center) Anxiety and stress can be overwhelming and affect your performance in school and daily life. Explore practical techniques that can help you reduce stress, better prepare for your exams, and cope with stress.
  • Time Management, Procrastination & Study Skills: (presented by Counseling Center)  Not enough time in a day; too many tasks on your plate? Discover ways to manage your priorities and overcome procrastination by setting your goals ahead of time.
  • Workshop on Sexual Harassment: Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity (OEOD) and UCI Police Department will present some information on the campus sexual harassment policies and procedures and will also walk us through some scenarios to help us understand what to do when sexual harassment Is reported.
  • 3D Printing (Basic Level):In this introductory (basic level) workshop, you will see the Makerbot 3D printer in action, discover how it works and what it can do, and then duplicate an item you choose from Thingiverse through the UCI Libraries 3D Printing Service.
