Loyola Marymount University Teaching Need

The Mechanical Engineering Department Chair at Loyola Marymount University
is looking for someone with expertise in the Thermal Sciences design area:
Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer, Heat Exchangers,etc. This is an ongoing
course – prior course material is available to the instructor.

They need a part time instructor in an undergraduate, senior-level course:
MECH 423 – Thermal Systems Engineering.
The need is for Fall 2012 – semester starts August 27, 2012.
Course meeting time is 3:00 to 6:00 on Wednesdays. The enrollment for
this course is unlikely to exceed a dozen students.

Course description:
Thermal Systems Engineering, 3 Semester Hours
Selected topics from thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer to
include: review of fundamental concepts; boundary layer theory; isentropic
flow through nozzles; shock waves; energy analysis; gas mixtures; heat
exchangers and design. Lecture, 3 hours. Prerequisites: MECH 223, 322,
323.

Position:  Engineering Intern (2)

Title:  Jr. Process Engineer (Lean)

Purpose of the Position:  Intern project will be to identify improvement opportunities within our manufacturing processes and help design new LEAN processes to address these opportunities.

Scope and Magnitude: Intern will need to design and implement, at least one, LEAN process.

Position Functions:
1.  Work wit hcross functional teams to design, implement and/or improve cellular flow process.  (60%)
2.  Suggest process improvements on material and people flow/utilization.  (20%)
3.  Balance lines per production requirements. (20%)

Working Relationships:  Interns will work with production groups, engineering and tech support.

Knowledge and Skill Required:

Education:  Recent engineering graduate or 3rd year, possibly 2nd year, mechanical or industrial engineering student.

Experience (and other qualifications):
Strong computer skills.
Ability to be a team player and effectively collaborate and partner with different functional groups and customers.
Must be detail oriented with strong organization skills.
Experience with computer use specifically in Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.

Position:  Quality Assurance Intern

Title:  Jr. Quality Engineer (Cost)

Purpose of the Position:  Intern project will be to identify and document costs associated with the QA function.

Scope and Magnitude: Create reporting for costs associated with the QA team, non-value added hours and extra  consumption.

Position Functions:
1.  Work with the team to develop a high level understanding of the QA function. (30%)
2.  Data gathering (costs) from various areas of the QA.  (35%)
3.  Create a data reporting tool in either Access and/or Excel. (35%)

Working Relationships:  Interns will work with production groups, engineering and tech support.

Knowledge and Skill Required:

Education:  Recent engineering graduate or 3rd year, possibly 2nd year, Finance or Computer Science student.

Experience (and other qualifications):
Strong computer skills.
Ability to be a team player and effectively collaborate and partner with different functional groups and customers.
Must be detail oriented with strong organization skills.
Experience with computer use specifically in Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.

Purpose of the Position:  Intern project will be to identify improvement opportunities within our manufacturing fixtures and help design new fixtures to address these opportunities.

Scope and Magnitude: Intern will need to have completed at least two designs that will be implemented into our manufacturing  environment.

Position Functions:
1.  Review fixture designs for specific areas of manufacturing. (60%)
2.  Suggest design improvements for additional; flexibility and utilization. (i.e.:  changeovers, cleaning, et.) (20%)
3.  Reduce costs to build and repair fixtures. (20%)

Working Relationships:  Interns will work with productions groups,engineering and tech support.

Knowledge and Skill Required:

Education:  Recent engineering graduate or 3rd year, possibly 2nd year, mechanical engineering student.

Experience (and other qualifications):

Fast-paced and dynamic ME team at Western Digital in Irvine is looking for a summer intern to help support testing/analysis of storage, networking, and entertainment products for the Branded Products Group.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform shock and vibration tests for product design validation
  • Perform thermal tests for product design validation
  • Collaborate with engineering team to characterize thermal and mechanical behavior of enclosure designs
  • Present test findings verbally and in written reports

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Upper division undergraduate or graduate student in Mechanical Engineering
  • Minimum GPA 3.0
