College students typically will spend about 1 month shadowing IEI’s Test and Manufacturing Engineers, Accountants, Program Managers and Purchasing personnel learning many aspects of Electronics Circuit Board Design, Fabrication and Test and business disciplines. Interns are also exposed to the Sales Process, Program Reviews and Internal Shipment Coordination meetings.

High School Students typically will spend ½ day shadowing their Mentor through their regular business activities. Both Interns and Mentees benefit from the experience.

DURATION:
College Students: Typically – 1 month, 3 days per week, 6 hours per day.
High School Students: Typically – 2 – ½ day sessions.

REQUIREMENTS:
College Students: Permission and coordination with their College Guidance Counselor or a Sponsoring College Professor. Paperwork needs to be submitted 1 month before actual start date.

High School Students: Permission from a recognized High School Mentor Program Coordinator.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

•   Performs routine engineering assignments of related tasks which are typically a focused portion of larger projects. These tasks provide experience and familiarization with the engineering staff, methods, techniques, theories, Corporate and division SOP’s, policies and projects.
•   Document development work including writing specifications for manufacturing or scientific test results.
•    Ability to solve routine design and engineering tasks with some assistance. Able to solve problems with periodic monitoring.
•    Assists in the preparation and participation in technical reviews and responsible for organizing data and preparing appropriate documentation for assigned projects.

Qualifications

•   Ability to discuss normally encountered technical or project management issues, both verbally and in written form.
•   Ability to work as a collaborative team member.
•   Ability to solve routine design, engineering problems with assistance

Education and/or experience

•    B.S. and 0- 1 year related experience (in-house, co-op or acquired outside)

Physical Demands

•   Must be able to lift, push, pull and carry up to 50 lbs.
•   In general, the position requires a combination of sedentary work and walking around observing  conditions in the facility.
•   Must able to climb ladders and move about in closed quarters facility non•manufacturing support areas.

Working
Environment

• Must be able to work in controlled environments requiring special gowning. Will be required to follow gowning requirements and wear protective clothing over the head, face, hands, feet and body.
• No make-up, jewelry, contact lenses, nail polish or artificial fingernails may be worn in the
manufacturing environment.
• Will work in a cold, wet environment and climb up and into large processing tanks.
• Will be working in a loud area that requires hearing protection and other protective equipment to be worn.
• Will work around chemicals such as alcohol, acids, and buffers that may require respiratory protection.
• May be required to work or be assigned to a different shift as needed. Must be able to work
overtime as required.
• Inside and outside working conditions.
• May be required to work in a confined area.
• Some Clean Room and cool/hot storage conditions

• Generation of precise instructions to our operations to ensure that customer requirements are clearly defined and met, or in short, to deliver a quality product.
• Be a subject-matter expert on manufacturing processes and materials to ensure a high success rate in our operations, and continual learning and growth in the technology of Direct Metal Laser Sintering.
• Review potential projects with sales people and estimators.
• Conduct pre-production review of projects for capacities, instructions and hand-off to production.
• Conduct post-production review of whether project happened the way it was supposed to happen.
• Build the process/materials information base as a reference tools for estimators and production.
• ·         Provide production support and trouble-shooting.
• Annotate our routings, key instructions or behaviors that the shop needs to follow.
• Provide and filter the information that estimators/quoters enter into the system.

Key Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Attributes

• Knowledge of Additive Manufacturing and Rapid Prototyping, especially DMLS.  Substantial knowledge of metal properties and applications, sufficient to know what questions to ask.  Knowledge of blueprint and tolerancing practices and conventions. Overall understanding of traditional manufacturing methods.
• Can operate an additive manufacturing machine (other than Objet). Can use CAD images to gather critical project information.  Ability to ascertain materials requirements. Effective customer communication to understand requirements. Microsoft Office Suite skills—Excel, Word, PowerPoint. Blueprint reading skills.
• Open-minded.  Good with people. A good teacher.  Quick recognition of what to do.  Able to quickly take many different perspectives/ opinions at once and create a logical conclusion/solution and recognize what to do.  A creative problem solver, with the ability to think on your feet.
