Teaching Philosophy
My approach to teaching is inspired by the tenets of Jesuit education, especially the tenet of cura personalis meaning “care for the whole person.” Even when teaching large lecture courses, I try to respect each student as an individual with unique circumstances and experiences.  In teaching introductory classes that fulfill general education requirements, I make it a priority to encourage my students to consider why the university would have this requirement in the first place, and what they can gain from taking the class beyond checking off this requirement. I also incorporate discussion of intellectual virtues into my introductory logic classes, following the example of Heather Battaly, Jason Baehr, and Dan Speak.

My teaching has also been profoundly influenced by my experience in the Lilly Graduate Fellows Program. I am grateful to Jane Kelley Rodeheffer and Arlin Migliazzo for their mentorship in this program, and to the other members of my Lilly Fellows cohort for their friendship and support.
