During the time we have been home working remotely, a lot of the work I’ve done has been largely record work with a lot of clean-up projects which have been helpful for our department to work on in preparation for the upcoming SILS. One of those important projects has been creating holdings statements for multipart monographs in which there are a lot of volumes. You will recognize these statements in Library Search– they clearly express how many volumes of a certain set we have on the shelf, without needing to scroll through the list of volume numbers. See, for instance, Brecht’s Stücke – in the screenshot below, we’ve recently added the “Bd.1-Bd.10”, clearly indicating which volumes are on the shelf. Previously, patrons had to scroll through a list of items to determine whether we held the one they needed.
UCI has long followed this practice for serials, but with introduction of the new UC Library Search, creating holdings for larger multipart sets will be helpful for patrons, catalogers and anyone else looking up our records so they can easily determine which volumes we have and which we don’t. If someone needs a specific volume, the holdings statement created will make the process for the researcher more efficient in determining where the volume they need is housed, be it at our library or another.
