UCI PFAS Health Study

The UCI PFAS Health Study Team is conducting a study to learn how drinking water that contains the chemicals PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, may affect the health of adults and children in Orange County, California. The study is part of a research cooperative agreement between the University of California, Irvine (UCI), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR).  It is part of a national Multi-Site Health Study on PFAS.  This study is important now because of increasing concerns about the potential health effects of PFAS exposure.

RECRUITMENT FOR OUR PRIMARY STUDY IS NOW CLOSED.  But if you are a parent of a child who is between 4 and 6 years old, you can still sign up for our PFAS Child Immune Study.

  • People who lived in Anaheim, Garden Grove, Orange, Yorba Linda, Santa Ana, Tustin/North Tustin, or Irvine, California, during any part of 2000 to 2019 may have been eligible.
  • Adults received up to $50, and children received up to $75 for participating in the study with a parent.
  • Participants were asked questions about their work and home, the water they drink, and their health.  Participants did not have to consume tap water to be eligible.  Participants also gave a blood and urine sample, and had body measurements (e.g., height, weight, waist and hip size, and blood pressure) made by health workers at UCI.  For child participants, we asked about social behaviors, emotions, memory, and learning.
  • Participants will find out what their PFAS blood levels are, and how they compare to others in the U.S.  We expect to receive those results from the CDC laboratories and mail them to our study participants by late 2023 or early 2024.
  • This study will contribute to everyone’s understanding of nationwide exposures to PFAS and their potential effects on health.
  • For any questions or to learn more, call our study office at 949-501-0139, or email us at pfas-study@uci.edu.
