I have always been fascinated with clouds. At UCI I work with Mike and Hossein in using a cutting-edge global climate modeling framework (UPCAM) to understand the behavior and role of low-level clouds in a perturbed climate system. As part of my past and ongoing research I have used a range of observations and models to examine how clouds interact with background aerosols, how clouds respond to warming, and what role clouds play in the global water cycle.

See Baird’s research website. At UCI, I am studying the response of tropical forests (the Amazon and Indonesian archipelago) to different types of land surface and environmental change. Human activities like deforestation and carbon dioxide emissions alter energy and moisture fluxes at the land surface, which in turn can impact regional atmospheric dynamics, and I’m using WRF and CESM to better understand these interactions. More broadly, my current and previous research has been motivated by the goal of understanding and improving Earth system models so that they can be used to make better predictions of regional climate change and its societal impacts.

Research interests: Nexus of physical climate and human systems, including effects of explicit irrigation on non-local hydrology in climate models, effects of MJO amplification on flood extremes and tropical cyclogenesis.

Primary developer of “ultraparameterization” — an exploratory strategy that attempts to include explicit boundary layer turbulence for the first time in a global climate model, on scales of 20-m (vertical) and 200-m (horizontal) or less. The goal is a more explicit treatment of the processes that mediate low cloud-climate feedback, one of the largest uncertainties in modern climate science. The strategy is to use leadership class computing facilities more intensely than has previously been done for superparameterized simulation. Hossein works with Pritchard and researchers from the University of Washington (Chris Bretherton and Matt Wyant), Stoney Brook University (Marat Khairoutinov) and DOE National Laboratories. This work is funded by a Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing (SciDAC) project.
