Apple Computer Users Urged to Update Their Computers

If you use an Apple Mac Computer we strongly encourage you to run Software Update to protect your computer from Flashback, a new Mac OS X virus.  Variants of the virus steal user names/passwords or use the computer to participate in click-fraud schemes.

If you do not know how to run Software Update you can contact your local computer supporter or learn how here

Note: This will only work if you are running OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) or 10.7 (Lion).  If you are running an older version of OS X, Apple is recommending you disable Java.

You can check to see if you are already infected at flashbackcheck.com.

If you have been infected and need help, please contact your local computer supporter or the bookstore can service your computer for a fee.

The virus exploits a Java vulnerability for which Apple provides a fix. However, users who have not installed the latest software updates remain at risk. The OIT Information Security team recommends that all Apple computer users ensure Java is updated on their computers and apply software updates as soon as they are prompted to do so.

As of last week, Flashback had infected more than half a million computers worldwide. Learn more about Flashback.
