Teaching 2020: Hindsight or Foresight?
The Faculty Learning Community is a fluid concept, defined and directed by the members as our conversations, inquiries, and bottlenecks* unfold during the school year. Last year’s community included faculty from all facets of the school, including Composition, Humanities Core, and Academic English. We shared common challenges and found strategies for teaching introductory reading and writing, more advanced analysis, and encouraging greater student participation in upper and lower division classes, with and without TAs.
For those of you who’ve taken the Active Learning Institute offered by the DTEI, there will be some productive synergies—points of overlap and departure—but this group serves more immediate, intimate goals. What’s happening in your class this quarter (or next)? How might you initiate small shifts to make things easier for you and more enjoyable for the students?
You can read more information in this post.
The FLC will meet Wednesdays from 11:30 – 1:00 pm
The FLC will provide lunch

*”Bottleneck” is a term from David Pace’s The Decoding the Disciplines Paradigm, a book we read and discussed last year. If it’s not familiar to you, don’t be put off, we can catch you up in the course of a conversation.
