sorry for the late notice but there are no joint lectures for EECS 129B, EECS 189B, or CSE 181B. Please schedule meetings with your own faculty supervisor. Any class-wide announcements will be made here if not emailed.
Fall Design BBQ, Friday 12/2/2011, 1:30-4:00pm
(Forwarded email)
On Friday, December 2nd the School of Engineering will be holding the annual school-wide 2011 Fall Design Review and BBQ from 1:30-4:00pm. Students are to submit senior design project planning posters [electronically to EEE Dropbox by Wed 11/23/2011] to give overall information regarding the projects that are still in the planning stage. The purpose is to help the students conceptualize their projects while giving themselves a project board to guide them for the second half of the senior design course when building the projects, as is actually done in industry. At the upcoming BBQ, the posters will become advertising vehicles for everyone to view and to anticipate the fantastic finalized senior design projects at the March 2012 Review.
Here are the Senior Project “Planning” Poster Format Guidelines:
- Provide a 0.25in border around the edge of the poster to facilitate printing
- Header Section include title, logo, location (i.e., where is the hardware?)
- List advisor(s)
- Goal short statement; include a website if there is an official page for a competition or design challenge
- Team Members organizational chart and include major (i.e., ME, AE, EE, CpE, CSE etc.) of participants
- Innovations in the UCI design what do you want people to notice?
- Schedule: include milestones and major review dates
- Progress images and brief captions to describe current status of the project. -Include a website address and contact information for those seeking to learn more about the project.
- Poster should be designed so that it can be updated easily.
Monday Lab for Team Forming
If you still have not formed a group or found an advisor, you *must* attend the Monday Lab on October 10, 2011, from 5pm-7pm, in Room ICS2 162. The steps are
- We will first form teams for all those who don’t have a team (must be 3-4 people). If you have fewer than 3, then you don’t have a team yet.
- Each team must elect or appoint a team captain.
- A team must be formed before you get matched up with a professor.
Team Formation
Please note that you should be forming teams and confirming with a faculty supervisor very soon. Your team captain needs to turn in a document in the EEE DropBox by Wednesday 10/5/11 stating the team members and confirmed supervisor. But if you still need to find a partner, you might want to use the EEE forum for this purpose.

Finding a Faculty Supervisor
We have created a (view-only) spreadsheet that indicates the current matching status between students and faculty. Some tips for before approaching a faculty member:
- Several faculty members express preference in talking to teams rather than individuals. So, please consider forming teams first before approaching particular faculty members.
- Actually, it would help if each team could identify a tentative team captain who acts as the contact person.
Instructions for Week 1, Fall 2011
Dear Students (EECS 129A, EECS 189A, and CSE 181A):
The first joint lecture for the three senior projects classes will be on Tuesday, September 27, 2011, from 3:30-4:20, in the room RH 101, even though the WebSOC says a different room for EECS 129A and CSE 181A.
(Updated 9/27) Feel free to browse this website for resources and potential project ideas. Then, fill out the Faculty Matching Survey by 11pm, Wednesday, September 28, 2011.
- If you are in EE or CpE, you will have the option of doing your project under
- Prof. Mark Bachman (EE) or Pai Chou (CpE) on the Doomsday super project (but you still need to be part of a team of 3-4; there will be multiple teams on this super project).
- One of the faculty members in EECS, and be part of a team of 3-4 (or whatever size is allowed by the specific faculty member), on
- If you are in CSE, you will have the option of doing your project under
- Prof. Ian Harris (of ICS): he supervise multiple teams of CSE students on their own topics.
- Prof. Pai Chou, who is teaming up with Prof. Bachman on the Doomsday super project.
- One of the faculty members in EECS, on a topic of mutual interest. They can also work on the Doomsday super project or a related / complementary project.
By week 2, you will need to sign up with a faculty member and be part of a team of 3-4 students (no more than 4, no less than 3). Fill out the Faculty Matching Survey by 9/28/11 11pm to get the process started. If the faculty members is in EECS (i.e., not Prof. Ian Harris), then you will enroll in a lab section under the faculty member who has accepted you. If you already signed up with a faculty member who has not accepted you, you will be asked to drop that lab until a faculty member has agreed to accept you.
Senior Projects for EE, CpE, and CSE
Welcome to the common site for Electrical Engineering (EE), Computer Engineering (CpE), and Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) senior design projects. This site is being set up to be a “start here” site where you can find links to present and past senior design projects. It is currently under construction, but more links and resources will be added over time. Stay tuned!
Features being planned for this year (2011-2012) include the following:
- Students will be able to choose from two models of project supervision: a topic mutually agreed upon with an individual faculty member (EE, CpE, or in CSE), or a large-scale project (>40 students) jointly supervised by Prof. Mark Bachman (EE) and Pai Chou (CpE, CSE). Half of CSE projects will be handled by Prof. Ian Harris of ICS.
- EE, CpE, and CSE will continue sharing joint lectures that will cover not only ethics and social impact but also design methods, project planning, and real-world case studies.
