Imagine you are a journalist writing for a US-based publication. 2012 is the sixtieth anniversary of the ANC’s Defiance Campaign–arguably the start of organized anti-Apartheid resistance. Your editor wants a story that looks back on this early period of activism.
As you research your story, you have to deal with the following question: Were Mandela and other ANC leaders in this period in agreement with older ANC positions, which sought access for blacks to existing middle class economic and political opportunities, or did the ANC already embrace the idea of revolutionary change?
How will you pitch your story to your editor in a way that responds to the question above?
You can use any course materials we’ve covered so far. You must cite evidence from both the selection from Mandela’s Long Walk to Freedom and Tom Lodge’s chapter, “Volunteer-in-Chief.”
