Project Four: Working with Colour

Using the image of a work by an artist or designer you admire that you found in Project Two, and using the skills you have developed in Tutorial Five, generate a derivative work based on an exploration of the color content found in the original. Things to consider:

  • How does the original work make use of color?
  • How does your derivative work reinterpret this use of color?
  • Is your work’s use of color similar to the original, or is it somehow different? If similar, what meanings does this use of color suggest? If different, how are these meanings altered?

Color is an exceptionally powerful tool and, we can only begin to scratch the surface of this topic in the context of this course. A highly recommended book on the topic is Johannes Itten’s The Art of Color.

Once you’ve completed your derivative work  perform the following tasks:

  • Create a single Project Four blog post.
  • Begin the post with a link to your Project Two post and a copy of the original image.
  • Add a short paragraph in which you describe your derivative work. Use some of descriptive words that we compiled in class. You may also locate additional descriptive words that you would like to add to your art and design lexicon. The importance here is that you understand the words you choose to employ.
  • Make an 8.5″ x 11″ printed copies of the derivative work.

We’ll work through a simple example of Project Four in class.
