8 | Due March 15

Please select one of the Digital Media Deprivation projects we discussed on March 11 or 13th and respond to the following questions.

What made this project so successful?

How might it have been improved?

How does it relate to one or more of the texts or artists we've
learned about in this course?

Note that you do not need to source an external text for this Writing. The project you choose is your external text.

Note also that we are seeking your thoughts, not a regurgitation of the discussion we had in class.

Writing 8 is due at 11:55PM on Saturday, March 15.

Thank you for all of your hard work on the Writings this quarter.

  1. I forgot to do this writing assignment (like the forgetful person that I am), so I’m going to write a short reply here instead. When I first saw Daniel’s project of his face wearing glasses I immediately thought: Google Glass. I say this because Daniel’s project was showing how he views the world filtered through Instagram filtered lenses and in a way Google Glass does that same kind of filtering. Although maybe not as obvious as the “Sepia” filter, etc., Google Glass does filter our vision using a technological “filter.” If all of us were to wear Google Glasses, our vision of life would be forever filtered through a pair of technological lenses, making us dependent on how we see our lives, similarly to Daniel’s perspective through filtered glasses. It was interesting because it had that striking resemblance to me, almost instantly, showing that we are more dependent on “filters” than we think.

  2. As we have discussed in class, I think I prefer the filters within his lens than filtering the whole photo, because Daniel Robert’s purpose of the project is to analyze how “he” sees all the filters differently; after all, it is his deprivation project. This is a simple yet meaningful presentation. This reminds me of Craig Mod’s article, goodbye, cameras. (Refer to reading 5) Mod noticed that he no longer had the connection with his cameras, because digital camera does not allow photographers to go through the printing process. Daniel expresses that everyone are now using filters to make their photos prettier, but the photographers can no longer take out a film camera to shoot and spend the whole day processing those photos in the dark room.

    • I actually compared Daniel’s project with Craig Mod’s article and thought the same thing. It was definitely more meaningful to see his glasses being filtered as opposed to his entire image. In fact, I can relate to how much filters has changed the way we view images. Whenever I take photos, I already start thinking about what filters or changes to the raw images I should make.
