“Undoing Racism” PISAB Workshop 2020

Undoing Racism® A foundational engagement with AICRE February 12-14, 2020

The Africana Institute for Creativity, Recognition, and Elevation (AICRE) continues with Workshop and Performance Series 2.  From February 12th-14th, The Peoples’ Institute return to Orange County to conduct a second, critical Undoing Racism Workshop® for our research community of faculty, students, staff and community members.

AICRE is an interdisciplinary research entity, which aims to create a dynamic exchange of cultural, scientific, economic and spiritual knowledge between local communities and academia to positively impact the next generation, so that people of African descent can equitably contribute towards a more sustainable society and command respect worldwide.

This meeting is intentionally intimate, bringing a small group of thinkers and practitioners from the African Diaspora to draw out the  blueprint of this institute, hoping to redraw conceptions of Africana peoples (continent and in the Diaspora) and their creative outpourings, as much has remained hidden or mislabeled (academically speaking) due to the limits of disciplinary, siloed and Cartesian thinking.

UC Irvine’s Dr. Tiffany Willoughby-Herard, Dr. S. Ama Wray and  Professor Ngugi wa Thiong’o, welcome PISAB once again with the support of many UCI schools and divisions.  The workshop experience leads to a shared understanding of how members of our campus live with racism as a daily, perpetual experience. The workshop creates an open and unburdened space for understanding how racism has imperceptibly been woven into our institutions and psyches. From our classrooms to faculty/staff hiring and promotions, this workshop moves us practically and decidedly toward a framework of mutual liberation–one that aspires to dissolve the oppressive structures and the ideas that unwittingly uphold them.
