A chosen, preferred, or lived name is a name that you choose to be called that is different from your legal name. There are many reasons why someone would use a chosen name, such as a reflection of gender identity, as a nickname, or as a westernized/Americanized name. UC Irvine is in the process of implementing the UC’s Gender Recognition and Lived Name (GRLN) policy. The implementation of this policy requires changes in forms and systems that require information regarding name and gender. Preferred names are used in the campus directory, class rosters, Canvas, diplomas, transcripts, and other university related records or documents.
- Current students and alumni can provide their lived/preferred name in StudentAccess.
- University employees can provide their lived/preferred name in UCPath.
- To update your UCINetID, complete the OIT UCINetID change request form. To update your email display name, please contact the OIT Help Desk (email oit@uci.edu or call x4222) and request that your Microsoft 365 Display Name be updated.
Please note that individuals who are both students and employees (including GSRs and TAs) will need to update their name in both StudentAccess and UCPath.
If you have any concerns or issues regarding your chosen/preferred/lived name in University settings, we encourage you to reach out to the department administrative staff or the Office of Inclusive Excellence to make sure you can make any necessary adjustments.
