Ideal Human Geometry -by Nicole
According to what I have researched, the ideal chair geometry various from each other since chairs can be made of so many different materials. (Lounge Chairs; Office chairs; Stools; Wheel Chairs) Plus, in the modern design field, furniture designers are also being very creative that they are very willing to break rules and creative something new, which makes it more and more difficult to measure the chair (like a chair that made of a piece of fabric). However, the most basic good geometries of a chair are similar to each other. I found two websites that introduce the basic ideal geometry of a chair.

My assigned the chair called STUA. At first I was very nervous about this class because I have no experience in modeling. Through the exercises in the training manual, I found myself gradually become able to model complicated items. However, the chair is the most complicated item I have ever modeled.
The biggest challenging for me in the assignment was to create the curved surfaces (seat and the back of the chair). At first I was using control points to bend the surface but later on I found out it was not working because the surfaces were no longer smooth at all. Then I saw a way to solve this problem in training manual, which is to use Patch. In addition, making the little screws that connect the frame and the back of the chair was also quite challenging, but I am glad that I found a way out.

About me
- Hi my name is Nicole Gong. I am an art major at UCI. Currently this is my third year studying here but I am planning to graduate one year early. I really enjoy the process of making arts. Drawing is my biggest hobby. I began learning drawing since I was 4, so I have been doing this for more than 15 years. I also enjoy making videos and doing sculpture.
10 years plan
- In 10 years, I really want to see myself working as a furniture designer, or an interior designer. However, right now I just started to explore in this field of study. I want to use my limited time to learn as many useful skills as possible. In addition, if possible, I also hope that I am able to get in a furniture design MFA program to extend my study after I graduate.
Tech
- I have taken art65 couple of quarters ago. In that course, I learned some simple kills using PS and Illustrator. But I am not very good at those and I think I almost forgot everything. I would see myself as a beginning level learner.
CAD
- I expect me to be able to do some deigns on computer after taking this course. As I have mentioned earlier, I want to become a furniture designer, so I think it is necessary to be able to use software like Rhino to a furniture designer.
