Recording a Video in Yuja

Prepared by Antoinette LaFarge. Last updated March 18, 2020.

  1. Launch Yuja Software Capture on your desktop.
  2. Adjust the following settings—they need to be checked before every recording.
    • Video: “No” video if you don’t want your face recorded.
“Yes” if you are using your webcam to record your face. The instructions below assume you will also be using Powerpoint. In this case, recommend to your students that they adjust their own Yuja settings for “Picture in Picture” playback.
    • Audio: Whatever source you are using (probably Mac Microphone or your headset)
    • Screen: This is very important and depends on your setup. One of the 3 choices below should be right:
      •  If you do not have an external display attached because you’re just working from your laptop) or you have an iMac or other desktop computer with only one screen, don’t change anything (the default is “Yes”). You will put Powerpoint in Slideshow mode at step 3.
      • If you do have a second (external) display with mirroring ON, don’t change anything here. You can check your mirroring settings in System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement. You will put Powerpoint in Slideshow mode at step 3.
      • If you do have an external display and mirroring is OFF so that you have an extended desktop and you want to be able to read from your notes in Presenter View, choose Advanced Settings and Single Secondary Display so that the notes on your main screen are not captured but the slides on your second screen are. You will put Powerpoint in Presenter mode at step 3.
  3. Launch your Powerpoint and choose either Slide Show or Presenter View, depending on your choices in step 1A-B-C.  (My version of PowerPoint defaults into Presenter View when I choose Slide Show, but one can fix this by clicking “Use Slide Show” at upper left.) This will hide Yuja’s “record” and “stop” buttons, but don’t worry…
  4. Use Command-Tab key combo to make Yuja visible again.
  5. Click the Yuja “Start” button to begin recording and immediately use Command-Tab again to switch back to Powerpoint. You should also see a 3-second countdown, so don’t start talking until that is over or your first words will be cut off,
  6. Keep talking and moving through your Powerpoint slides as usual with the arrow keys until you are finished
  7. You should see a tiny red square in the extreme lower right of your screen. Click that to stop the recording. Yuja will pop up in front of Powerpoint.
  8. Click the “Save” button to save the Yuja recording (in the cloud).
  9. You will get an email notification when the recording has been processed. Even short 20-second tests took a couple of minutes.
