Zoom vs. Yuja

Q: What’s Zoom for? What’s Yuja for?

Short A: Zoom is for synchronous meetings. Yuja is for recording lecture content.

Long A:

The long answer is a bit more complicated. There’s a fair amount of overlap between the two. This page is a work in progress and will evolve as I try things out with people.

Observations so far:

For meetings of any kind, Zoom for sure. Yuja is a one-way street.

The main advantages of Yuja are:

  • It can be integrated with Canvas. Follow the “Configure the Canvas integration” instructions.
  • Once you have the dedicated program installed, it’s very simple. Follow the “Download & install software” instructions.
  • The videos you make never land on your computer. They’re processed by Yuja and delivered to your “Media Library.” From there you can right-click and Play, Share, or Publish the video.
  • Captions are automatic. Keep in mind that captioning is required.

However, you can also record content in Zoom. I recommend trying Yuja first as Zoom has more steps. But there are certain situations where Zoom is the better choice, such as:

  • You want to record the content to your own computer for further processing. (Yuja makes it hard to get an editable copy of your video.)
  • You want to be able to toggle between cameras or between camera and screen sharing during a video. Yuja forces you into a composite of your screen and a single camera.
  • You want to host your videos on YouTube. (Note that in this case you’ll need to enable YouTube captioning.)

Not sure what to do? Let’s meet about it.
