General Information

Call time 8:00 am at MSTB

Anza Borrego Camping Site: East of San Diego

Transportation to and from the campsite is provided.

Saturday night lunch and Sunday morning breakfast are provided.

Vegan and Vegetarian options are provided.

Lunch is not provided, but itinerary has built-in time for you to get lunch with your car group on your own.

Water available.

Showers, restrooms, and picnic tables at the campsite.

Tents and sleeping bags are provided, but feel free to bring your own.

Hikes are optional.


Itinerary

Saturday, December 2nd, 2023

8:00 am Arrive at MSTB

8:15 am: Collect waivers from officers, sign, and return

8:30 am: Leave UCI

10:00 am (optional) Grab lunch with your car group

11:30 am: Arrive at Borrego Springs

12:00 pm: Hike at Calcite Mine Hiking Trail

Mid Afternoon – Arrive back from hike

Dinner*

Night – Stargaze

Early Morning – Early hike, time TBD by interested persons

10:30 am: Depart campsite

12:00 pm (optional): Grab lunch with your car group

1:30 pm: Arrive at UCI

Recommended Clothing

Daytime Attire (High of 63°F)

Base Layer: Moisture-wicking long-sleeve shirt and long underwear.

Mid Layer: Lightweight fleece or wool sweater for insulation.

Pants: Comfortable, breathable hiking pants.

Footwear: Sturdy, comfortable hiking boots.

Accessories: Hat and sunglasses for sun protection.

Evening & Night (Low of 35°F)

Base Layer: Same as daytime; moisture-wicking is key.

Mid Layer: Add an extra fleece layer if needed.

Outer Layer: Heavy windbreaker or lightweight insulated jacket.

Pants: Same as daytime or add thermal leggings underneath for extra warmth.

Footwear: Warm socks with your hiking boots.

Accessories: Warm hat, gloves, and a neck gaiter or scarf.


Recommended Items to Bring

Extra Layer for Stargazing: A down vest or an additional fleece jacket.

Sleepwear: Thermal sleepwear for extra comfort in your sleeping bag.

Backpack: A small backpack to carry extra layers, water, and snacks.

Portable Chargers and Cables: For your devices, if needed.

Refillable Bottle: For refills from the water spout at the campsite.

Snacks: For energy during hikes or the road trip.

Spending/Lunch Money: Most drivers will pull over on the way to and from the campsite to get food

Medications: Don’t forget !!!!

Games: Board and card games.

Hiking Shoes: pls i wore airforces one time and i slipped a lot and the grip of my shoes were ruined by the end of it :’)

General Tips

Layering is Key: Conditions can change, so wear layers for easy adjustment.

Stay Dry: Choose materials that wick away moisture.

Comfort First: Ensure your footwear and clothing are comfortable for both hiking and stargazing.

Remember, while we’re there to enjoy the stars and nature, safety and comfort are key. This list should cover most needs, but consider your personal requirements and pack accordingly. Can’t wait to see everyone there!

  • Cost Breakdown: Get a detailed explanation of the trip costs and what’s included in your fee.
  • Interest Form: Sign up to express your interest and help us make the trip as enjoyable as possible for everyone.
  • Schedule and Itinerary: Learn the exact dates and times for our journey to the stars.
  • Apparel Advice: Tips on what to wear to stay comfortable and warm while we explore the night sky.
  • Meal Planning: We’ll go over which meals will be provided and how we’ll keep our energy up for all the fun activities.

Remember, space is limited! Make sure to attend the info session in MSTB 114 at 6:30 PM to secure your spot. Whether you’re an experienced astronomer or just love the great outdoors, this trip is sure to be a highlight of your year!
