WordPress 3 Update

As you may have noticed, we have updated our installation of Blogs@UCI to the latest version of WordPress (3.01).

New Features

New Theme

Some of the new features include a new theme called TwentyTen, which takes advantage of another new feature called Menus. TwentyTen includes drop-down menus, custom backgrounds and custom headers allowing you to adjust the look and feel of your site to suit your tastes. We’re now using TwentyTen as our main theme.

Menus

You can now create custom menus to make WordPress into a more powerful Content Management System. Currently, only TwentyTen supports menus natively. All other themes can use Menus as a Widget in one of the sidebars. Over time theme developers should update their themes to take advantage of Menus.

Contextual Help

Each screen in the Admin area now includes contextual help. While you are creating a post or page, editing your settings, etc., simply select the Help tab at the top right of the screen. Contextual help from the WordPress Codex will appear.

Sites Instead of Blogs

WordPress is now using the term “Sites” instead of “Blogs” throughout the admin interface. If you have multiple blogs you will now see a section in your Dashboard for My Sites. This term goes along with the evolution of WordPress into more of a Content Management System in addition to a robust blogging service.

We hope you enjoy the new Blogs@UCI service. If you have any questions or problems, please contact the OIT Help Desk at (949) 824-2222 or oit@uci.edu.
