Starting in the 2024-25 academic year, CEE@UCI is excited to welcome the first cohort of students to the department’s inaugural Master of Engineering program in Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE M.Eng).
The CEE M.Eng program is a new 1-year Master’s program focused on preparing students with the technical and managerial skills needed to address increasingly important applications in civil and environmental engineering practice. The inaugural year of the program focuses on the topic of Sustainable Infrastructure. The technical program curriculum will equip students with the skills needed to address the increasing needs for minimizing environmental impacts and pollutant emissions in the design of large-scale infrastructure and the operation of complex organizations. The managerial program curriculum will equip students with the skills needed to manage infrastructure projects that are typically undertaken by civil and environmental engineers in practice.
The program curriculum is designed with heavy participation from industry and government practitioners. Practitioners both teach courses in the program and provide students to work on applied projects at their companies or agencies through the program Capstone project. These opportunities provide students with the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience in applying practical skills to real-world problems and expanding their network among civil and environmental engineering practitioners to enhance their career opportunities.
Compared to the traditional Master of Science (M.S.) program, the M.Eng program is aimed at preparing students for applied practice in industry and government agencies, whereas the M.S. program generally focuses on preparing students to pursue a PhD. or other research-oriented career paths.
The CEE M.Eng program provides an opportunity for those looking to further their career within civil and environmental engineering practice or those who are interested in pivoting their career into the field with an added forward-looking focus on sustainable infrastructure.
