Professional Development Event: Scientific Consulting Workshop

Are you interested in alternative careers outside of scientific research after graduate school? The Beacon Fellowship, a summer consulting program led by McKinsey/Bain/BCG alumni, is hosting a consulting webinar with a Bain consultant & Harvard MBA graduate. The presenter, Daniel Gastfriend, was a consultant at Bain & Company before receiving his MBA from Harvard Business School and his MPA from the Harvard Kennedy School. He will present an overview of consulting, lead a case interview training and answer questions about the industry.

Outreach Event: Sharing the Spirit Holiday Party

Description: Every year the Festival of Children Foundation hosts a holiday party for 500 children without permanent housing from Orange County. The children are given warm meals, participate in holiday activities and crafts. We will be hosting a booth for this event with different hands on science activities. This is a great opportunity for volunteers to give back to their community!

Outreach Event: Illumination Foundation Holiday Carnival
Date/Time: 10:30 AM – 4 PM, Saturday, Dec. 14
Location: Stanton Children’s Resource Center (8920 Pacific Ave, Stanton, CA 92804)

Description: ISP will be hosting a booth with hands on science activities for this years illumination foundation Holiday Carnival. Illumination foundation works to break the cycle of homelessness by providing services and housing to families.

MSTP Distinguished Lecture from McGowen Institute at MIT – Dr. Michael Halassa, MD, PhD

The MSTP Distinguished Lecture Series is proud to announce our next speaker, Dr. Michael Halassa, MD, PhD, who is a psychiatrist and neuroscientist at the McGowen Institute at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Talk Title: Networks Underlying Cognitive Control and Flexibility

Dr. Halassa uses his experiences as a psychiatrist to draw questions that he investigates as a neuroscientist to better understand psychiatric disorders. He is looking to deepen our understanding of how the brain produces cognition, attention, and decision-making and of what key changes occurs in these processes with disorders he sees routinely in the hospital. Recently, he found that the thalamus, which has long been taught as a passive sensory relay point, also plays an active role in initiating, sustaining, and switching between cognitive representations. Alterations of this newly found thalamic process leads to behavioral changes characteristic with ADD and ADHD. As a psychiatrist, Dr. Halassa sees a broad range of different psychiatric disorders, and more than anything, he deeply wants to understand the mind of his patients and hopefully find ways he can better care for them.

Winter Quarter Enrollment Reminder

Please enroll in classes for Winter quarter. You must be enrolled in 12 units by Monday, December 16th.

First years: Please enroll in graduate classes as soon as possible. We are anticipating some classes may need to be moved to larger classrooms and the earlier we know which classes need additional space the sooner we can request larger rooms.

Do not wait until the last minute to enroll. If you are not enrolled, your fees will not credit to your account and there is a $50 late fee you will be responsible for. Look carefully at your Zotbill to make sure you do not have any outstanding charges and/or a financial hold. If there are outstanding charges on your account your fee payment will not credit.

The Graduate Division is pleased to invite applications for five internal endowed fellowships. All Ph.D. students who meet the specific fellowship criteria may apply. A brief summary of each fellowship is provided below. Please refer to the calls for applications and application forms for complete eligibility and application information; these are linked below and also available here.

Applications should be submitted in PDF format to Jenise Shourds, in the School of Physical Sciences, no later than 5:00 p.m., December 3, 2019. Please note that this is different than previous fellowships, when you would send applications to Garrett Yoshitomi.
