On Tuesday, 10 March at 2:00 p.m. in NSII 1201 Prof. Houlin Xin will present a seminar for all Physical Sciences researchers interested in machine learning (title and abstract below). This seminar series is offered every other Tuesday at 2 in NSII 1201 to inform, engage, and facilitate artificial intelligence research activities throughout all four PS departments and associated research collaborations.
On Friday, 13 March at 4:00 p.m. in NSII 2201 (note it is upstairs) there will be another Machine Learning Nexus Social Hour. This social hour has a focus on facilitating conversations on machine learning at a more informal level. Your active participation can help us make the Machine Learning Nexus in Physical Sciences a useful tool for research and career development. The PS Data Science Fellows will make 5-minute talks of their work to facilitate discussion.
Attend activities of the Machine Learning Nexus in Physical Sciences as useful for your research and career. Contribute to, and keep track of, the Machine Learning Nexus at https://ps.uci.edu/psml/ .

Title: Deepfake, artificial intelligence: will machines replace us all?
Abstract:
Deep learning schemes have already impacted areas such as cognitive game theory (e.g., computer chess and the game of Go), pattern (e.g., facial or fingerprint) recognition, event forecasting, and bioinformatics. They are beginning to make major inroads within physics, chemistry and materials sciences and hold considerable promise for accelerating the discovery of new theories and materials. In this talk, I will introduce deep convolutional neural networks and how they can be applied to the computer vision problems in transmission electron microscopy and tomographic imaging.
