UCI Esports will be offering two $6,000 scholarships to current UCI undergraduate students who are interested in the intersection of health & wellness and gaming & esports!
Little is known about the impact of physical fitness and nutrition on the performance of competitive esports players. There is a growing body of scientific evidence regarding the negative effect of sedentary time on general health and wellbeing. However, with the sedentary nature of esports competition, we are unsure of the long-term effects to overall health, which poses a few questions.
Are we able to mitigate the negative physiological effects of sedentary activities?
Are we able to enhance physiological performance (physical and cognitive) of esports competitors?
Recipients will help develop a health and wellness initiative for the esports program, in coordination with our resident exercise physiologist and faculty affiliated with UCI Esports. There may be an opportunity to conduct an independent research project about the impact of your health and wellness intervention on competitive gaming.
In order to be eligible, students must:
• Be enrolled at UCI in Spring 2020 and Fall 2020
• Have a minimum GPA of 2.0
• Commit to 15 hours per week for working on their project (300 hours total dedicated to the project over two quarters)
• Have a demonstrated background and interest in health, wellness, gaming and esports
• Attend weekly check-in meetings with the UCI Esports Exercise Physiologist
For successful applicants, the scholarships will be paid over two quarters (half in Spring 2020 and half in Fall 2020) and can be used to pay for tuition and fees.
