“Hi everyone,
My name is Desiree Macchia, and I am a PhD candidate in the Beier Lab. We are recruiting new undergraduate researchers in our neuroscience lab to assist on projects related to the circuitry underlying neurodegeneration in the mouse model, specifically in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. We also have opportunities to work on a project related to drug addiction.
We have both in-person and remote options available (perfect for those who are hoping to gain research experience in the safety of your own home)! In-person work would include mouse colony maintenance and genotyping, behavioral testing (such as Auditory fear conditioning and learning/memory protocols), brain clearing, calcium imaging, and stereotaxic viral injections. Remote options would include behavioral video scoring, cell quantification and image processing (interest in python programming would be ideal).
A minimum of 12-16 hours/week for 1.5-2 years is required. A background in neuroscience and mouse handling would be useful, but is not a requirement. An ideal candidate would be invested in the project and would participate actively in lab meetings and other lab events. Open to the possibility of independent projects and the opportunity to contribute towards publications. Please contact me at dmacchia@uci.edu if you are interested, and include your resume/CV, fall class schedule, and unofficial transcript in the email. Thanks!”
