In this one-unit course (University Studies 3: Reading Shakespeare, course code 87557), we will read Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, a delightful and mysterious comedy about shipwrecked twins, mingled genders, disordered households, and wise folly. We will read Shakespeare’s play out loud as a group, supplemented by discussion, viewing opportunities, and a field trip. There are still a few spaces, so enroll now! CHP now has a new Office Manager!
We are pleased to announce that Rachel Roberts has joined our staff as Office Manager!
Rachel, an alumna of UCI and the CHP (’14, English with an emphasis in Creative Writing), worked as a Student Assistant at the CHP office. She returns to us from UCSD, where she has been working in student affairs.
Rachel hails from San Diego but is thrilled to return to UCI, which she considers her second home.

Honors Seminar in Political Science

Only students currently admitted in the Campuswide Honors Program or the Political Science Honors Program are being invited to enroll in this limited-enrollment course.

Honors Seminar in Political Science: The First Amendment and College Campuses
This seminar will examine basic principles of freedom of speech under the First Amendment with a focus on how they apply on college campuses and will focus on the free speech rights of students and whether, when, and how expression can be regulated.

Chancellor Howard Gillman, Ph.D., is an award-winning scholar and teacher, he has academic appointments in the departments of law, political science, and history. Among his books are The Constitution Besieged: The Rise and Demise of Lochner Era Police Powers Jurisprudence (Duke 1993), The Votes That Counted: How the Court Decided the 2000 Presidential Election (Chicago 2001), and American Constitutionalism (with Mark Graber and Keith Whittington). He has also co-edited two other volumes and authored more than 40 articles and book chapters. He has received many awards for his scholarship, and for teaching excellence and dedication to students.
Prior to his appointment as provost and executive vice chancellor at UC Irvine, Dr. Gillman was a professor of political science, history, and law at the University of Southern California. From 2007 to 2012, he served as dean of the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences.
Howard Gillman became UC Irvine’s sixth chancellor on September 18, 2014.
Dean Erwin Chemerinsky is the founding Dean and Distinguished Professor of Law, and Raymond Pryke Professor of First Amendment Law, at University of California, Irvine School of Law, with a joint appointment in Political Science.
Prior to assuming this position in 2008, he was the Alston and Bird Professor of Law and Political Science at Duke University from 2004-2008, and before that was a professor at the University of Southern California Law School from 1983-2004, including as the Sydney M. Irmas Professor of Public Interest Law, Legal Ethics, and Political Science. He also has taught at DePaul College of Law and UCLA Law School.
Dean Chemerinsky holds a law degree from Harvard Law School and a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University.
