Grad School Entrance Exam Study
Dr. Joanne Zinger, a faculty member in the Department of Psychology and Social Behavior is conducting a
research study in which she is looking for students who are planning to take the MCAT, LSAT, or PCAT
sometime in the next year or so. This study is not at all associated with the Princeton Review, Kaplan
Test Prep, or any one of those courses, but she is basically interested in finding about the lives of
students who are preparing to take one of these major exams. If you participate in her study, she would
like to talk to you on the phone a few times to ask you questions about your mood, personality, health,
and studying habits, she would have you come to her office for one visit, and she would ask you to fill
out a very short survey right before and right after your exam that asks you how you are feeling at that
moment. The phone interviews and the office visit would be arranged totally around your schedule, and you
would be paid $35 (or given 3 experimetrix credits) to thank you for your help. If you think you would
like to participate, please call Dr. Zinger at (951) 662-3735 or send her an email at

Become a Peer Facilitator for R.E.A.C.H.!
Reaffirming Ethnic Awareness and Community Harmony, known as R.E.A.C.H., is an educational program of the Cross-Cultural Center devoted to Intergroup Dialogue and increasing awareness and knowledge of the issues and topics important to community harmony in a multicultural world. R.E.A.C.H. consists of a select group of UCI students who are trained through a year-long class (AfAm 198) to facilitate Intergroup Dialogues on a variety of diversity and social justice related topics. R.E.A.C.H. Facilitators are chosen from various segments of the campus community, and share a dedication to building a harmonious academic and social environment at UCI. These “R.E.A.C.H. Workshops”are initiated by request and allow for people from different social identity groups to converse on a wide range of issues. They are designed to offer an open and inclusive space where participants can foster a deeper understanding of diversity and social justice issues through participation in experiential activities, individual and small group reflections, and dialogues.
The intergroup nature of dialogue emphasizes open communication on justice issues, such as social group membership, identity, and positionality through structural and societal power relations.
In R.E.A.C.H. class, participants share personal experiences, exchange information about each others’ cultures, and examine both personal and cultural narratives in the context of systems of oppression and privilege. They reflect on relevant issues, work with differences and conflicts, and identify socially just actions they can take individually and in alliance with others.
The Primary Goals of participating in the R.E.A.C.H. Program:
- Develop a capacity for intergroup dialogue, which includes effective listening, suspending individual bias and judgments, identifying assumptions, critically reflecting, and inquiring to know more.
- Develop skills to work with differences, disagreements, and conflicts as opportunities for deeper understanding and personal transformation.
- Explore the similarities and differences in experiences across social group memberships.
- Gain knowledge and understanding of the dynamics of difference and dominance at the personal and socio-political levels.
- Identify individual and collective actions for interrupting injustices and building alliances to promote greater social justice.
- Reflect upon and learn about self and others as members of cultural groups and social group(s) in the context of systems of privilege and oppression.
