Classroom list

iClicker base stations are installed in nearly all general assignment classrooms, with a small number of exceptions.

Policy & philosophy

  • Consider your goals: Are you interested mostly in encouraging attendance, fostering engagement and participation, or using the technology for scored quizzes?
  • What level of attendance is expected or what percentage of a final grade would you assign for participation and/or correctness of answers? Do you have a participation threshold where you will award or withhold points?
  • Plan ahead for handling absences, forgotten remotes, and technical issues. We recommend dropping a few of the lowest scores over the course of the quarter.
  • Consider whether or not you will allow students to use the mobile application iClicker Reef and let your students know in advance.
  • Create and publicize a deadline for students to register their iClicker remotes and/or Reef accounts.
  • Explicitly state that it is unacceptable for a student to use another student's remote or account in order to submit responses on the other student's behalf.

Best practices

We recommend iClicker for activities such as short, in-class quizzes. We do not recommend iClicker for high-stakes assessment activities for several reasons:

  • The potential for issues with hardware, software, batteries, input error, forgotten clickers, or other problems.
  • Students may worry about whether or not their answers are received; using clickers for something like a final exam may negatively impact their performance due to additional anxiety.
  • The higher the stakes, the more likely classroom management challenges are to occur.

Info for your students

Important!

There are two important pieces of information your students need in order to know what steps to follow to register their iClicker remotes and/or Reef accounts:

  1. Are you using iClicker Classic or iClicker Cloud?
  2. Are you requiring remotes, requiring Reef accounts, or allow students to use either at their discretion?

Be sure to include this information in your syllabus, on your Canvas course space, or wherever else your students are expected to find information about your course and its requirements.

Please refer students to https://sites.uci.edu/clickers/students/ (the 'Students' page on this website) for the most up-to-date instructions and related information.

We've also created a template for adding important iClicker information to your syllabus:

If any of your students are having technical difficulties, you are encouraged to have them contact us so that we can work with them directly to figure out what's going on and make sure they have what they need to participate in your class.

iClicker software

There are two software options for instructors: iClicker Classic and iClicker Cloud.

The major difference is that iClicker Classic stores your data (student information, activity) on the computer or device where you have the software (for instance, on a thumb drive), while iClicker Cloud stores data online.

We recommend iClicker Cloud for several reasons, including:

  • You don't have to bring a laptop or thumb drive (iClicker Cloud is installed on classroom computers)
  • You can access your iClicker Cloud data from any web browser, any time
  • You can add co-instructors to iClicker Cloud courses so that you co-instructors and/or TAs can all run polls and share the same, consistent data

If you have used iClicker Classic before and it works well for you, you can continue to use iClicker Classic. The only circumstance in which it's really necessary to use Classic instead of Cloud is if you will be using iClicker in an environment where you have no internet connection (iClicker Cloud requires an internet connection).

UCI Canvas integration

There are several benefits to using the iClicker / Canvas integration:

  • Sync your roster with iClicker to match students' names to their registered iClicker remotes and/or Reef accounts
  • Sync iClicker scores with the Canvas gradebook
  • Avoid re-registration fees for students who have purchased used iClicker remotes
  • Enable students to go through the iClicker remote registration process via your Canvas course space

Enable registration via Canvas

iClicker Cloud (Recommended)

The "iClicker Registration" integration in UCI Canvas is only compatible with iClicker Classic. Do not enable the "iClicker Registration" integration in Canvas if you are using iClicker Cloud.

Instead, enable the "iClicker Cloud" integration and/or refer your students directly to https://app.reef-education.com/ to create (free) Reef accounts so that they can join your iClicker Cloud class.

Once students have Reef accounts, they can add remote IDs to their Reef profiles in order to use iClicker remotes, and/or they can purchase Reef subscriptions in order to participate using an app or web browser on their phones, laptops, or tablets.

Run class sessions

iClicker Cloud (Recommended)

If you're using your own laptop, be sure to connect it to the iClicker base station using a USB A-B cable (available from Classroom Technologies, ALP Suite 3200). *Please remember to re-connect the original cable when you are done with class!*

Follow the step-by-step instructions from iClicker to run a poll.

Note: We do not recommend using the 'Quiz' option exclusive to iClicker Cloud unless all of your students are using the newest iClicker remote model -or- the Reef app to participate. The original iClicker and iClicker+ remotes are not compatible with iClicker Cloud quizzes, and students using those remotes will only be able to participation in polls, not quizzes (you can still grade and give both participation- and performance-based credit for polls!).
