Johnny and Benedict, Brothers at Last

By Arnold Magh

Benedict Cumberbatch will be co-starring along superstar actor Johnny Depp in a new biopic about Whitey Bulger. This untitled movie is based on a book titled “Black Mass: Whitey Bulger, the FBI and a Devil’s Deal” where the FBI colludes with the Irish mob in order to get rid of the Italian Mafia. Depp will take the role of the Irish mobster James “Whitey” Bulger and Cumberbatch will play along side him as “Whitey’s” brother famed politician Billy Bulger, who plays dumb to the fact of his own brother’s criminal activities.

Benedict Cumberbatch will be co-starring next to international superstar Johnny Depp

Cumberbatch is rising up in the world and is playing role after role along side Hollywood heavy hitters. Where formerly he was a relatively unknown actor flying under the radar until his role of Sherlock Holmes. Cumberbatch is not breaking into center stage in the world. With his multiple box office hit movies he is slowly disassociating himself with only his initial success with Sherlock Holmes and into his various noteworthy roles such as Kahn in Star Trek: Into the Darkness and Smaug in Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug.

Even as simply a voice actor his voice is as recognizable as his cheek bones. No announcement about Cumberbatch’s upcoming movie role illicit a reaction of wariness and hesitation. However, this could simply mean that he is being typecaste into roles that will befit his cold logical demeanor. At any rate it won’t be long until Cumberbatch is no longer seen as simply a cult favorite, but an international superstar in his own right.

  1. Benedict Cumberbatch is definitely on the rise; it is evident with how much exposure he has gotten as a celebrity. It seems that most of his recognition comes from Sherlock, which says a lot about trends and fan followings, as well as reflect how the public is able to affect stardom. Really, it is almost safe to assume that the Cumberbatch trend gained momentum once the fans of Sherlock soon realized there was an actor behind the character. Judging by the new role that Cumberbatch has been casted in, as well as other previous roles such as Kahn and as Smaug, you start to see the beginnings of a typecasting. However, if you take into account his role as Sherlock, you might also wonder about where his “type” necessarily lands and if Cumberbatch would end up falling into a certain role, forever doomed to play the same cookie cutter build of Mr. Cold and Sarcastic.
Of course, the brilliance of Cumberbatch isn’t not just from his acting, but also from his interactions with the other actors or actresses. While I do enjoy Sherlock alone, the scenes where Cumberbatch interacts with Freeman never cease to amuse and amaze me. The two of them have great chemistry together. How the Sherlock reacts to other situations and interacted with other characters definitely helped to boost Cumberbatch’s appeal. Now that Cumberbatch has been casted with Depp (who is greatly well-known actor), I can’t help but wonder about what kind of dynamic the two actors would have together and how that will affect fan perception of Cumberbatch.
