ASCEND Mini Conference
The ActionS for Community ExcelleNce & Development (ASCEND) program is a mentoring and personal development initiative founded by UCI Physics & Astronomy graduate students Arianna Long & Katy Rodriguez Wimberly in early 2018. Our mini conference will bring together CUWiP attendees for several workshops that guide you through constructing your own definition of professional success, and teaches you how to identify and cultivate beneficial mentoring relationships.
To maximize the number of people we can serve through this program, we decided to reduce the pre-conference agenda to Friday afternoon only. The workshop schedule is as follows:
Friday, January 17th, 2020 | Location: MSTB Room 121
1:30-3pm: Developing & Celebrating Your Goals Research shows that planning small, actionable steps towards a large, long-term goal makes you more likely to actually achieve it. Here we will walk through a method of goal planning that allows you to see measurable progress towards your greater goals, and celebrate along the way.
3-3:30pm: Snack Break
3:30-5pm: Building Your Mentor Network A well-developed support network has a strong and wide foundation, like a spider web or a pyramid. Here we will discuss the various long term benefits of identifying and cultivating role-specific mentors, and creative ways to initiate new relationships, too.
