I completed my B.S. and a professional degree in Bioengineering at the Universidad de Concepción, Chile, where I also pursued an M.Sc. in Biochemistry and Bioinformatics with Dr. Marcellini. There, I got to work in both basic and applied science projects, from generating transgenic animal models for the study of the development and evolution of skeletal structures, to developing a novel cell bioassay that enables efficient detection of dioxins and dioxin-like compounds. My curiosity and motivation toward applying new strategies that combine fine-tuning of gene regulatory pathways and tissue engineering brought me to UC Irvine’s Biomedical Engineering program and the Athanasiou lab. As a researcher within the DELTAi team, I am applying my experience in cell and molecular biology to engineer cartilage neotissues apt for translation and long lasting treatments. Outside the lab I enjoy surfing, diving, camping, and last minute road trips with my wife.
