EVENT: Programming with Python

Programming with Python (2-day Workshop)

When: November 12 & 14, 2019 from 1 – 5pm

Where: Langson Library Room 228

Python is an interpreted, high-level, general-purpose programming language. Created by Guido van Rossum and first released in 1991, Python has a design philosophy that emphasizes code readability, notably using significant whitespace. It provides constructs that enable clear programming on both small and large scales. The best way to learn how to program is to do something useful, so this introduction to Python is built around a common scientific task: data analysis.

EVENT: Unix Shell Workshop

Unix Shell Workshop

When: November 7, 2019 from 1pm – 5pm

Where: Langson Library Room 228

The Unix shell has been around longer than most of its users have been alive. It has survived so long because it’s a power tool that allows people to do complex things with just a few keystrokes. More importantly, it helps them combine existing programs in new ways and automate repetitive tasks so they aren’t typing the same things over and over again. Use of the shell is fundamental to using a wide range of other powerful tools and computing resources (including “high-performance computing” supercomputers). These lessons will start you on a path towards using these resources effectively.

EVENT: Version Control with Git Workshop

Version Control with Git Workshop

When: October 31, 2019 from 8:30am – 12:30pm

Where: Langson Library Room 228

Version control is the lab notebook of the digital world: it’s what professionals use to keep track of what they’ve done and to collaborate with other people. Every large software development project relies on it, and most programmers use it for their small jobs as well. And it isn’t just for software: books, papers, small data sets, and anything that changes over time or needs to be shared can and should be stored in a version control system.

Graduate Fellowship Opportunity

The Humanities Center at UCI invites applications from UCI doctoral candidates in any field to serve on the Digital Humanities Exchange (DHX) steering committee. We are pleased to offer each of two graduate fellows a  stipend of $750.00 in research funds for the 2019-2020 academic year.

Stemming from the Digital Humanities Working Group, which was founded in 2014 within UCI’s Humanities Commons (now, Humanities Center) the Digital Humanities Exchange welcomes staff, faculty, and students  who have scholarly, pedagogical, or personal interests in the Digital Humanities. This includes people who make use of digital research tools or who research digital objects, as well as those  who bring innovative digital tools into the classroom. The DHX especially welcomes the uninitiated but interested, who want to learn more about DH and how they can open their own work up to digital humanities tools.  The group is interdisciplinary and includes participants from across the Humanities and UCI. The DHX sponsors events such as guest speakers, conferences, and skill-shares. We are full of enthusiasm and continue to grow!

The DHX seeks the participation of up to two graduate fellows to:

      • Assist and advise with programing, publicity, and community building around DH
      • Attend steering committee meetings 2 times a month
      • Attend institutional and public events sponsored by the DHX

Applicants are invited to contact DHX co-chair Professor Deanna Shemek with questions. Please send applications to Professor Shemek through dighum@uci.edu and include the following with your application materials:

      • Current degree program and year
      • CV (maximum 2 pages)
      • Brief description of interest or experience in digital humanities: What would you like to do or see in DH?

Application deadline: 14 October 2019
