Customizing Writing Settings

A few settings for writing posts can be customized such as the size of the composing box, the default category for your posts, the use of emoticons, etc.

  1. In the Admin Panel, click on Settings > Writing.
  2. Formatting – You can check the box to convert smileys and other emoticons typed in as plain text to display as a graphic. If you choose to write your own HTML, you can have WordPress check for invalid nested XHTML.
  3. Default Post Category – If you have set up Categories, you can choose the default post category here.
  4. Default Post Format – If your theme supports it, you can set the default Post format. Choose from standard post, aside, chat, gallery, etc.
  5. Default Link Category – If you have set up Links, you can set the default link category here as well.
  6. Default editor for all users – Choose Block Editor to try Gutenberg or switch back to the Classic Editor. (The Classic Editor is being retired at the end of 2021.)
  7. Allow user to switch editors – Default is “No”. If you select “Yes”, the users on your site can choose the preferred editor in their User Profile.

If you have made any changes, click Save Changes at the bottom of the page to save your updates.
